Kinetic Inride Issues

  • In theory, yes. That is assuming you do the Spindown Calibration, that should account for the tire and roller pressures.
  • In theory, yes. This is because a typical TR Virtual Power setup uses a speed sensor as the foundation of it’s data.
    • That typically samples at each complete revolution of the rear wheel (may vary with some specific sensors, but most only pick up once per rev).
    • The Kinetic sensor is placed on the rear roller which has two advantages.
  1. The roller is smaller, and makes many revolutions for each wheel revolution. That means the sampling rate from the magnet to the sensor is much higher than a typical speed sensor in a VP setup above. So, you should see faster response (up or down in wheel and resistance unit speed) times vs a normal VP setup. That means sprints in particular may be more “accurate” since the updates in speed should occur more quickly.

  2. It is measuring the direct roller revolutions, which means it is also tied directly to the resistance unit. This means that any wheel slip is not a direct issue with the estimated power data. Wheel slip in excess could lead to a delta between what you feel vs what the resistance unit is generating, but that should be a rare case if you follow proper setup processes.

have the same setup.
I set the tire pressure for each time, and do the spindown calibration 10 min into the workout. This seems to be working great.

Just curious, are you calibrating in the TrainerRoad app or the Kinetic app?

I use the IOS app from TR. I start the workout and calibrate it via the “devices” tab in the TR app just before the first interval starts.

Hi. Just wanted to follow up and say that InRide seems to be working well. It seems to be more responsive to quick changes in power, like in VO2 Max workouts, which was one major con of the setup I had prior using a wheel based speed sensor.

Hey everyone,
I have a Kinetic Inride version 2. I’ve been using it for a couple of months with the Kinetic app without any issues at all. I decided to treat myself and get a subscription to TrainerRoad. I was super pumped to do a ramp test and start getting faster only to find that the inride is not being picked up by the app. I tried both using my cell phone and laptop and didn’t have luck with either. I also tried pulling the battery to reset etc and still nothing. Why would it show up on the kinetic app but not on TrainerRoad?

Just an update to my original post from last night. After my morning cup of coffee, I went back out to the garage to take another look at things. I started with deleting the kinetic app to ensure I wasn’t trying to pair with multiple apps and still no luck… I ended up going through my phone and upon clicking on the settings for the TrainerRoad app, I found that my phone wasn’t allowing the app to use Bluetooth. I changed the setting and now everything works. Bring on the ramp test.

Bumping an old thread…

…does anyone know what the spindown numbers in the Kinetic app actually signify? I’ve noticed that in the last six months my spindown figures have gone from being 1.90 on average to more like 2.14. Is my flywheel slowing down more slowly now (number of seconds to drop from x to y), or is it the other way around and it’s actually some sort of calculated drag figure?

The sweet spot for spindown times with a Kinetic Smart trainer or an inRide sensor is 1.5 to 2.0 seconds.

Thanks. Odd that it would be starting to slow down more slowly. I wonder what’s going on there.

Variables I can think of that might be related:

  • Tire: change or wear to the casing = rolling resistance change
  • Tube: same or different = rolling resistance change
  • Tire Pressure: still the same and consistent or not
  • Trainer Roller Pressure: still the same or not and impact on tire info above
  • Trainer Bearings: rolling better or worse over time
  • Trainer Resistance Unit: unlikely, but maybe leaking or performing different for some reason

Edit to add:

  • Wheel: different or wear to bearings that alter bearing friction, or even tire rolling resistance with related tire, width, pressure changes if they are present.

Several potential areas, and you may be able to rule out many of them. What remains may be related.

Kinetic products are junk, consistent connection issues, parts on trainer do not last long. Never again!

I’d beg to differ on the trainer parts (have used two models and found them flawless over the last decade)… but yeah, the Inride has been a disappointment.

For me at least, there is a clear and hard line between the standard (dumb) fluid trainers that are just short of bombproof, and their very sketchy history with anything that uses electricity. Their pods and smart controlled trainers are spotty at best.

I second that. Nothing but faultless operation. It’s a dead simple trainer after all. Nothing to break.

I would not worry about what the numbers of the roll down signifies. Just make sure you give it about 10 minutes of warm up time before you hit the “calibrate”.

used mine for a long time, and it was handed down to me. Still works. power seems consistent to me.

So I went to calibrate my trainer a week ago but the app failed to launch (crashes). Had the same thing happen today, so I figured I’d uninstall / re-install the app.

Except it’s gone from the Play Store. WTF! Basically can’t do the spindown calibration now.

Yeah, Kinetic up to their usual great customer service…

I’ve been watching the comments on the FB group and many others there are not impressed with Kinetic. They effectively yanked an inconsistent tool to make room for a “better” one… that will come at some point in the future, apparently.

I calibrate my Inride from the Trainerroad app. I’ve never even opened the “KK App”

I’ve never had good luck with the calibration in TrainerRoad. Can’t speak for it lately, but it used to crash and lock up the sensor, requiring the battery to be removed / replaced.

Plus I also use Sufferfest, which has (had?) no inbuilt calibration.
