I've been a bad girl and got three red days in a row. Now what?

Today I was rounding out a build block with next week a chill week. Today was red, but I decided to go do a group ride. I don’t get the opportunity often and I was really looking forward to it.

Anyhow, it turned into a monster effort, overshooting the TSS goal for the week. Now the next two days are red, which is fine. I need it.

My question is, since the plan has a low-key threshold session planned on a red day, should I just skip it, or move it forward so I can get the full TSS dose for the week?

Incidentally, I felt really good on the ride. I’ve been dialing in my on-bike nutrition and I’m absolutely floored at the performance improvement. Even 2.5 hours in I felt relatively fresh. This was my longest ride of the year.

Does it still have a threshold session planned for the red day? I would accept the plan adaptation when offered.

Congrats on what sound like some awesome performance and conditioning gains.

As mentioned above, it’s odd that it would be a red day AND a threshold day. Is that correct? IF so, then I would just see how you feel on the day of.

It’s not totally clear to me when the ‘chill week’ was going to be. Is that this week (starting Monday 6/9) or is it next week from now (Starting 6/16)?

If this week was originally going to be your recovery week then I’d skip the threshold workout since you really stretched the end of an already harder ‘build’ block and go into recovery.

But if it was supposed to be next week then I’d probably at minimum push that threshold workout out a day. Since you were already fatigued and then went out and did what sounds like maybe your hardest ride of the year I would err on the side of more recovery and make sure you’ve recovered before doing more intensity.

Yeah, I didn’t explain that as well as I could have. The ride in question was the last ride of a Build block. The next two weeks (June 9-22) are a Specialty block ending with a race on June 21. So this week (starting June 9) is not really a rest week, but intensity is way lower than it has been. So, “chill week” is somewhere between a hard Build week and a rest/recovery week.

When I looked at my calendar this morning I saw an adaption suggestion that just removed the threshold ride completely. So, I’ll just trust the TR AI Overlord and let it do it’s thing.

When I logged in this morning the suggested adaptation removed the threshold ride. So, now I actually have three rest days in a row, two red days plus a day with no scheduled rides. I may try to move an endurance ride up to the day after the two red days.

Hey @MxNat! Congrats on your group ride! It’s good for the heart and motivation to do a ride you look forward to

As far as the plan goes, I would follow what is recommended. Red Day, no riding and I wouldn’t move the workout to the following day as you’ve just entered the 2 taper weeks leading to your event. The idea here is to keep the legs fresh so you’re full gas on Beat the Clock # 1!
