Is there a "go to" helmet these days that is aero with good cooling?

I think the 3 is also purported to have better ventilation, which anecdotally comports with my experience, as I bought and returned the Evade 2 owing to it feeling hot but kept the evade 3

surprised no one said POC procen air

I have this helmet and use it for shorter events, no idea how Mr Morton wore it for unbound

I mentioned it above, but since he was also talking about MTB use, I didn’t really think it was practical.

Just saw a listing for it for $268 (w/ coupon) at Brands and I will admit my finger hovered over the “add to cart” button.

The POC procen is a great helmet for crits. I really have no complaints about it. I tend to run really hot, not sure I could swing that helmet for unbound. I will think about it

Have a spare helmet with your support team and swap out if necessary?

I actually have done that each year. I ride the first part of the day with an aero helmet and swap to a cooler helmet the rest of the day.

I really want to try a Procen or upgrade to an Evade 3 but haven’t needed to. I don’t think anyone should feign surprise about inclusion or not of any helmet, given the replacement time frame most of us have for them.

That’s a great idea for unbound. Particularly with the north course where it’s a drag race for the first couple hours. Middle part of the day is where it gets hot and more climbing/slower.

Problem is your alone when you need the aero helmet. The race to the first aid station is usually with people

I feel like for there’s a “if you’re going fast enough” property to these aero helmets that helps them push air through properly above a certain speed that pros seem to be able to maintain. Like above a certain speed the venturi effect they keep talking about becomes effective or at least more effective. Hence why Jonas Vingegaard can wear a Giro eclipse on mountain days in France in July and be fine while if I do “mountains” in July in Massachusetts buckets of sweat pour onto my glasses and my brain cooks cuz I slow. That being said I found my Poc Ventral while purportedly “slow” by aero lid standards never cooked me or caused sweat management issues.

I went to the local Specialized store and all they had was a small Evade, so not able to test fit. I went ahead and ordered a large from an online shop that is running a decent sale, so hopefully it will fit. I’ve had good luck with specialized helmets in the past, so hopefully it works for my head. I could have special ordered it through the Specialized shop, but their corporate stores don’t discount anything and I wasn’t going to pay full retail.

That’s odd. My Specialized-owned LBS does discounts and negotiates too.

I wish ours did. It’s really barely a store, just a small little showroom in a swanky shopping area. Maybe ~20 bikes and a very limited inventory of anything else. They are nice guys and happy to let me try things on or test ride a bike even when they know I’m not buying there (specialized is getting paid regardless). It seems more like a marketing location than a sales location, which is better than nothing I guess. When I bought my epic 8 last year, I had to drive an hour to an independent Specialized dealer to get a reasonable deal.

Wow. Mine is the exact opposite. They’ve easily got at least 75 bikes on the floor.

I used the Giro Eclipse for an 1150km ride last year during which daytime temperatures were sitting in the mid 30s, and the venting capability proved to be very effective

I just got the new Sweet Protection Falconer Aero

It has these slick magnetic aero covers that you can easily remove for day-to-day riding in warmer temps and pop on when you wanna go fast. Not sure if it’s been wind-tunnel tested, but I’m very happy with the fit, construction, and appearance.

Define aero here…
Anyway MIPS AIR is the money. I’ve got a POC Ventral Air and a Kask Elemento. The Kask Elemento feels much cooler than the holey POC. A lot of cool feeling come from the airflow around band at the base of the helmet particularly in front.

Now the S. Austin factory location is closed. Maybe they just want to sell e-bikes to the AI crowd.

I was thinking about getting the van rysel helmet. Its half the price of the evade. Anyone have any exprrience with it?

I assume its a decent one for the price? Cant see any conparative data vrs evade though

I “was” going to get one but flat out could not figure out how to get one in the USA (heck I would still get one).

I found a discount on a Evade 3 and ordered it after coming up short with the Van Rysel
