how many “Voted Best of blah blah City 2022-2024” stickers do you see? you know they are paid for or they ask 15 relatives to vote and win the vote 15-1 or something
ever bought a New York Times Best Seller? did you know if they sell enough electronic copies through pre-order they get on the list? did you know they charge $1 for these and buy a bunch themselves?

tbh if the guy rode 500 miles he’s better than me…and if I can be entertained and learn from him, i’m on board. and if he inspires people to do something healthy, I’m all for it.

As a racer, you can’t control who will or won’t show up. You’re also not responsible for deeming a race to be any kind of championship. WUCA has deemed it so. Got a problem with that? Petion USAC to sanction it then.
I was planning to race Hoodoo this year(before it was announced as this years North American Champs) but didn’t work out. If it would have worked out, and managed to win, I’d claim that result too

I mean he can claim it and it’s true…and while technically correct he’s only using it to give himself more credence…when in fact even though it’s true, his “national championship” is just a made up thing where he outraced someone else.
it’s fine though…it’s just SMH to those that know. he doesn’t really need to claim that - he is fit and has a good amount of knowledge to offer. it’s whatever…like I was saying it’s done in every industry.

Aren’t all cycling national championships things where you out race someone else?
I don’t understand this whole thing though. Is it purely because the sanctioning body is not promoting their events and as a result the fields are vanishingly small? Because the sanctioning body is different from USAC?

it’s just that if you call yourself a National Champion to someone who isn’t in the know, you think, Tom Brady is a national champion…not a guy who beat 7 50 year olds one year (and had a van) and beat one other person another year.
fine you’re a national champion but it literally cannot be any less competitive or prestigious of a title…so why flaunt that as a status symbol when you know it’s not really that big of a thing.
taking 40th place in Leadville is more prestigious, no?

Seems there’s agreement he did win a national (or continental?) title. It isn’t a very competitive event. He’s using it to further his credentials as a cyclist
The disagreement then seems to be if it is ok to brag about winning a not very competitive event to your professional and personal benefit
I mean…it’s a little suspect, but the anger and indignation seems even stranger. From my perspective being bothered by the whole thing is even weirder than what he’s doing.

I agree. And the maybe 10 or so times I’ve heard VC mention his “National Championship”, I feel like he was usually saying it tongue in cheek, though it isn’t always easy to discern. He’s very self-deprecating. From the many hours I’ve spent watching his videos, I’d say he would have preferred more people would compete in the race.

I rode our local trails at first light a couple weeks ago and fairly certain I’m now the 2024 National Champion in spider web accumulation. This was verified by my wife and our cats when I arrived home, so you know it’s legit.

I watch a few of his videos each year during training season. They are decent, but IMHO Your Boy likes to hype himself up and I do find his self aggrandizing a bit cringy at times. This National Championship business definitely falls into that category.

What about pro Boxing? How many World Champs do you have in each weight class? 5 or is it 10?
I am sure they all have a Champ belt and identify as a World Champ.

I never lost sleep over this.
I have lost sleep wondering how I will race 100 miles and then drive my family on vacation 600 miles away after the race.

Idk, Tyler seems like a pretty down to Earth dude. I don’t really feel like he talks a bunch of crap about people. If anything given his commentary on the event I think it would make him happy that other people would be putting the effort he does into it.
