This looks very exciting. Funny thing is that I just a couple of days ago sat down and planned my first weeks of outdoor riding based on the standard TR-plans. I think I will evaluate case-by-case if I will convert the Indoor workout (as have done the last years with good results) or use TR’s suggested outdoor workout depending on my ā€œavailable training groundsā€. Moving into Short Power Build LV I have found the following workouts are missing it’s outdoor counterpart:
Joe Devel +1
Baird +2
Whiteface
Bashful +2

Todays outside workout, was transcribed onto my Polar m460 .

But dont do the same as me in assigning it an indoor workout as I failed to get GPS data until i reset the head unit. However i did get a highest ascent achievement - which isnt hard to beat an indoor turbo trainer!

I totally agree that if a feature is not interesting or useful to someone, there’s not much point in complaining about it. If that’s the case, just don’t use it! It would be pretty trollish to jump in the forum and denigrate a feature you’re not going to use.

But I don’t think I’m seeing much if any of that in this thread. What I’m mostly seeing is a discussion by people who are ARE very interested in this feature and are providing feedback on its execution and the perception of the feature’s value relative to expectations by the community. Which of course the TR team is free to consider or ignore.

I also totally agree with your other point. Saying ā€œTR should have worked onā€¦ā€ comes across as presumptuous and condescending. Unless someone has built a successful SAAS company from scratch by sheer creativity and hard work they probably don’t have much justification for dictating priorities to Nate and the TR team. But I’m also not seeing a whole lot of that here either.

I do see people (including myself, mea culpa) saying ā€œI wish TR had worked onā€¦ā€. Which I think is qualitatively different. I read those as statements of personal preference and value that (potentially) provide useful customer feedback to the TR team.

Ok, this is a dumb question – but to do the workout outside, do I run TR on my phone to know what to do?

I am not worried about HU integration (nice, reliable Garmin 800 here). but need to make changes if I need to use my phone.

I love the idea of this. I think that the next level up would be to have a coach talking to us through an earpiece… I mean you could literally use a voice to text thing like google to read the coach text that is already there. also have it counting down intervals and telling us when to move on to the next stage of the workout. telling us what intensity to ride at… etc…
I know headphones can be a little dangerous on the road… but a earpiece in one ear only isn’t so bad… is it?

There’s a whole thread on it. The answer: yes, no, and everything in between.

This said, I fully agree with the first part of your post - if you just take running, someone who would propose TR-like running plans, let me shuffle the workouts in a calendar, calculate my pace targets, download the interval program to my watch, and add a set of sync’d audio cues (ā€œOk, this is the last interval of the set coming up in 20 seconds, let’s concentrate on cadence for this oneā€) would get my money.

The simple answer: no. You learn the workout and execute it, print it on a piece of paper you tape to your bars, write it on the back of your hand, or program the workout on your head unit, and go ride.

I did a variation of junction over the weekend outside. It was fine. But, I have a lot of less than busy roads to do things like this, a decent amount of 5-12 min climbs. the gap between intervals was a bit longer due to getting back to where I started. As for the sprints, those hurt. Sprinting outside will get it going faster I feel than the trainer. I try and do all my sprint stuff outside.

I must be a dunce- how do you get the ā€œride outsideā€ functionality? If I click on a upcoming workout in my web calendar, PC calendar, or iOS calendar I don’t get an inside/outside choice in any of them. Is there some sort of trick? Do you need to be a beta tester or something?

I think that’s unlikely, whilst 4min doesn’t sound loads you’re looking for a road 50% longer than 8min intervals, that’s significant (particularly for those stronger than me looking at pushing mid-200w).

I am impressed! I’m new to training with power and Junction was looked like a very intimidating format to take to the road, so I’m definitely glad there are alternates for those kind of workouts!

I agree that I would probably get more effort/effect outdoors on the sprints specifically versus on the erg trainer.

Hopefully as I use TR and my power meter longer I’ll get the confidence and ability to translate more sophisticated workouts to the road.

The new Garmin workout/training plan API sounds pretty legit.

I still think Trainerroad has the right approach with building these simplified and looser structured workouts for outdoors. I have a pretty good 7 mile loop that I use when I want to ride outdoors, but also want a good structured workout. It has little traffic and only 2 stop lights that you’re going straight through and another 3 stoplight with a right turn that you can usually roll through. At about 15-20 minutes per loop its a pretty good place to ride structured workouts, but even I find random stuff getting in the way sometimes. Following a set workout on my Bolt never works because if you end up missing an interval or needing to draw an interval out for some reason it can throw the entire workout off because the only option you have is to pause the workout.

I think if you really wanted to take a workout on the road, you would basically need 4 things showing up on the head unit:
-Interval Description
-Power/Target Power
-Duration/Target Duration
-Next Interval Description
But the workout itself shouldn’t be controlled purely by time and set durations. You would need a button to move forward/backward through steps as needed. But at this time, I don’t think any of the bike computers support functionality like that. Maybe if you built a bespoke Garmin Connect App.

This way, if you were to decide to draw out an interval to match what’s going on in the world around you, it wouldn’t be running over the objective of the next interval.

Yes, and needs sw work on the app side to use the (new) API. So - not available yet, unless the TR crew already did it in the background and release it, like, now.

I guess the big question is if developers only really learned about all this now at the conference or if they got a heads up and have been working already. From Ray’s article: "TrainingPeaks will likely be the first company taking advantage of this new feature, but I fully expect from talking to others that you’re going to see most other training platforms jump on this as fast as they can grab those cans of Redbull and Mountain Dew and code this to work. " Makes it seem like they can only really start working on this now.
