I agree, and the TR RPE scale seems to be more in line with how I would define different effort levels personally, perhaps because it is a more linear scale.
I have Geiger scheduled for tomorrow.
Geiger is 3x12min @ 88-94%. ftp
The outdoor version calls for 4x8min @ 88-94% ftp
I’m totally baffled as to why I would not just do 3x12min outside???
Why is it asking me to do 4x8min???
probably the likelihood that people have a stretch of road where they can ride 12min at sweetspot uninterrupted.
Certainly you can just do 3x12 outside if you have the road/climbs to do it.
I think there’s just as much chance of finding an 12 min stretch as there is an 8 minute one for sweet spot power levels. I think it’s very strange unless the outdoor rides are set as generic rides to cover multiple different indoor ones.
Easy money that they are shared across multiple indoor workouts.
That’s just too generic then in my opinion.
Mid-December in Central Europe. Let’s do it!

I’ll probably have a foot of snow on the ground by then!
I disagree. One thing the guys have said, and that I agree with, is that many of the indoor workouts are too intricate to really do well outside. As such, a “dumbed-down” version is a natural direction to go for making “outside specific” workouts.
Anytime we choose to move outside for a workout (rather than the inside one on the plan) we have to recognize that the control and specificity we have inside may well be sacrificed to some degree while outside.
As such, I don’t think it is practical to use the same workouts or expect the same level of control when outside. If that is true, then the differences between several inside workouts and their outdoor equivalent may well be shared.
Keep in mind that we are applying stress to the body to drive adaptation. In some cases (like VO2 Max) that specific loading can vary a bit while we still gain the overall desired adaptation. For that reason, I think it is very practical to share the workouts.
Not to mention the fact that a 1:1 match-up inside:outside would require around 2000 more workouts in the catalog. That is no small undertaking to make all those. I think it could easily be handled with less than half that.
There’s always going to be more variability outside. The specific roads, weather, and other conditions available for each rider will vary and that means you can’t expect the same work when compared to outside.
yep this is what i have been doing to take SS rides outside… however looks like TR have done some homework to change the nature of the workout to take into account variances between In & Out door riding…

Minute 32 a question is brought up for a “companion for outdoor workouts”…
Nate finishes off his answer “… maybe some day we’ll get there.”
… I think we’re getting there ![]()
Super good find @moshecattan, and worth a listen by everyone (I added a Soundcloud link above).
Cool to hear the overall comments about future stuff and consider where we are now with the Calendar, imported rides from outside, etc.
@aldenhart SSBLVII should be updated and good to go now. Thanks for pointing out these were missing. We had all plan workouts accounted for, but I believe our change that went in last night may have reverted some of the sorting we had done.
Thanks @bnied and the whole TR team! Awesome work
The triathlon plans have running workouts as well as swim workouts. If you open the weekly tips, you will see them listed.
During the usual refinement I apply to my power zones chart, I noticed something funny.
The TR RPE (far right) that I have added seems to be nearly a perfect doubled value of the Power Zone # (far left):
SS = 3.5 essentially, so the RPE 7 even works there. It breaks down a bit at VO2 Max and above, but it is interesting. Might be handy if you happen to know the Zone Numbers well… just double it for RPE.
@GeorgeAnderson we updated the rest of the endurance outside workouts, but I noticed something I don’t quite like with how we are choosing the outside workout for this workout type. I have a couple ideas on how to move forward, but in the meantime Big Mountain and some other endurance workouts don’t have an outside workout equivalent. We should have a path forward in the next day or two, with the goal of having an outside workout that is available for you before Saturday.
@bnied I’m assuming this has something to do with the code:
- I click on a day with a workout from my calendar
- I click on a workout on the sidebar within the pop up
- For half a second the option button on the right side of the pop up that allows one to change to outside ride displays “No Outside Option”. This even happens when I click on an TR workout already chosen to be done outside.
Separate thought:
After clicking the save button within that pop up it immediately closes that pop up. I don’t know how conducive this is if there are multiple workouts scheduled for a single day. Maybe only have that pop up close if one clicks the x button or outside the pop up?
Thanks for the feedback @moshecattan. We’ll take a look at those repro steps and see if we can make this better. I’ll also talk to everyone about your 2nd point.
I have phoenix +1 this weekend which is 75 minutes at 85-90% (248-263w) however the outside version calls for me to “Directly settle in as close to 274w as possible for 75 continuous minutes.” This would be 94% of my FTP. Any reason why it’s wanting me to ride this at a higher power? is it because peoples power tends to be a little higher outdoors and you’re taking that into account?
There are others like Slide mountain where the alternative has you do the opposite and do LESS power. Slide mountain is 3x10 at 85% however the outside version is calling for 3x10 at 75%! Quite a big difference. why wouldn’t I just do the intervals at 85%?
