Hey Nate, with all respect I donāt think that the poll is that conclusive, statistically speaking. In any case, my commented reflected my own opinion. Iāve been an avid TR user for 2 1/2 years and Iām a big fan of the training system and the podcast. I carry TR stickers on my bike and racing disc but Iām still using TR as it was before you guys launched the schedule. Since then, most of the new features that were launched had zero impact on my use of the system and this(outdoor wkos) is another one that will make no difference to me. As a triathlete I think thereās much more room for improvement on the calendar, for instance.
I hope this reply donāt come across on a negative way, Iām a huge fan of the system and dedicated to training(just check my account and youāll see) but I honestly donāt think that outdoor workout is something to be taken as a priority.
Kelseyh, Iād suggest the TR RPE scale is based upon the HR and or power as a % to maximum effort. The Coggins scale is not linear and somewhat confusing to new users. I prefer the TR scale for RPE.
The TrainerRoad ones are certainly more intuitive (in the sense that it is how I would rate the workouts without knowing the table upfront).
This is a necessary step on the way to head unit integration though, the poll just asked to see if there was any interest in cutting a release at this point and there was. The poll wasnāt used for priority setting or anything like that by my understanding, just to see if there was any point in polishing up this extra release.
There are really simple ways of building the āoutsideā-rides workouts on Garmin Connect. Even though I have PM on all my bikes I probably wonāt be doing any TR-rides outside simply because I ride MTB and riding hard on the XCO-course is better than trying to follow a specific power target. Itās a really fantastic idea though.
It looks like all of the vo2 work in SSBLVII doesnāt have an outside equivalent, and it did the day this was launched. @bnied is this intentional? Specifically Taylor -2, Bluebell, Mills, and Spencer +2
I fully agree that this is a necessary step towards head unit integration but it is clear on Nateās original post that they have nothing to announce on this subject so it doesnāt seem like something to happen in the near future. People that decide to take their wkos to the road will have to find alternate solutions for a while.
This feature really confuses me because as it has been told several times on the podcast that outside isnāt the most appropriate place for structured workout. I know that thereās a legion of people that wants to spend less time indoor so the feature will probably please a lot of people however where i see the whole system going is towards half implemented solutions (the calendar is half good and outside wkos are half integrated).
None of these are problem to me because what matters is the quality of the plans, workouts, information shared on the podcast and you can revert the system back to 2 years ago that iāll keep using it the same way but It would be really good that they had mastered the calendar first(as they did with analytics and this forum for instance) before moving to something else.
Yes this is strange. Iāll investigate today and make sure things are sorted on this.
@bnied
When will the other missing outdoor rides be available? In particular - Big Mountain, which I am doing this coming Saturday.
Chad finished these up and I am adding them this morning, so expect them by EOD today.
Fantastic thank you
Hm. Statistically speaking, this is your n=1. Keep in mind that TR actually has a pretty good data set showing how much people skip workouts for outside riding and may have decided thatāstatistically speakingāthere is lots of interest in making those rides better in terms of structure even if they remain imperfect in comparison to indoor training.
Yup. And I wonder whether many are a bit like me - just looking to get fitter but not desperate for the serious gains made by full time indoor training. I got into cycling partly because of the fresh air and being able to train outside in a more structured way is fantastic for me. Best of both worlds. Although I am also n=1
Is the outside feature just cycling workouts or will it include running workouts in the triathlon training plans?
I agree. I want the balanced training of indoor. But I love riding outside! This gives me something to work with. It wont be perfect but then I am very far from perfect. I look forward to me making the workouts for my garmin or TR adding it. But Im happy with this addition.
I must be missing something here. From what I have read the only new āfeatureā is that you are directed to a different workout if you are riding outside. Otherwise everything works identically as before- you either run the workout on the phone app, create a workout for your head unit, or print it out and do it manually. Is there more to it than this? I guess that I donāt understand the hoopla from what I have read.
No I think you have got it right. I guess for me the issues are that it should be simple to export these workouts to a head unit. But then TR kind of lose control of the workouts if that happens. Or I need to buy a mount like a quad lock for my phone and I dont want to do that as I have a 1030. Or I have to find a template and educate myself on how to create some kind of template ORā¦
It would be nice to just hit a button and continue on. I donāt want to educate myself on any of these strategies. I would just rather be outside riding.
But in the end it is a heck of an option to have and Ill have to do some work or spend some money. That is completely my choice.
I guess we could setup a google drive or something to upload workouts we create and share them with each other so we are not all re-inventing the wheel.
I think this current offering is a simple stepping stone. The poll that lead to this release and the subsequent comments from Nate all point to something more on the horizon. I think HU integration is absolutely going to happen.
What units and when are open, but I canāt see the current offering as the āendā of the tool. They chose to add the current level of outside offerings so people can at least consider using more tailored workouts to make the best possible use of their time outside.
Yes, they still stand by the inside having the best bang for buck and control, bu they are also realists when they admit they know people want to (and have already been doing) some variation of the TR workouts outside (I have done a few).
Long run, I expect we will forget that this was ever an option as I am pretty confident guessing that we will see far more from this start, down the road.
Did somebody say āDisasterā?
Disaster outside, mid-December in northern lower Michiganā¦what could possibly go wrong?
