How to tell improvement weekly not just FTP

How in TR can I see if theres improvement say on a weekly basis, not the 28 days as with AI, what metrics do we look at, AI is showing much lower than what I achieve outdoors in a 20 minute test. I tried working to the AI prediction but its far to low. I was on Join and after each workout it adjusted FTP

I have never used Join, so no experience with whatever their daily FTP is, but daily or weekly FTP changes are marketing gimmick. FTP doesn’t change like that.

There is no real way to tell if you are getting better weekly. That said, you can look at your weekly training and look for consistency in following your plan every day. Then look to have progressive increases each week over the last. Finally, look to stack 3 solid consistent weeks with progressive overload together before a rest week. Repeat. This is how you improve over the long term.

I would be wary of any system offering you accurate FTP readings multiple times a week.

FTP is already a variable that changes daily, so trying to measure it almost as often is just madness.

You need to wait long enough between measurements to see a trend forming.

all depends on what you want to measure and even then as g7nxx said you can have a good/bad day and it already varies a lot.

Me personally I just go out on a certain route and have a 10m segment I go out on as fast as possible and that usually gives me a general idea where I’m at and if im improving at all (besides what the software tells me).

Also depends on what you want to measure as progress… power? durability? long efforts? short efforts? etc

In terms of accurately measuring ftp changes doing it weekly is a bit pointless.

However there are other metrics you can track from workout to workout that can give you a good idea of improvement across workouts and as long as they are trending the correct direction you know things are working.

Don’t compare your Join FTP to your TR FTP. They are two separate entities.

You can instead look at the power profiles of recent TR workouts vs your last Join workouts. If they are roughly the same, then you’re fine. Career → Power Records, then adjust the dates for TR only and Join only plots.

This is what I’m looking for but unsure what to be checking or how.

Depends on the workout.

Each general type should be tracked a bit differently.

For something like FTP work you can check time in zone, changes in RPE, hr in relation to power etc.

If you are looking for some immediate satisfaction/motivation from a workout, looking at your power curve can provide that for some people. If you are hitting PR’s on your power curve (within the season or all time), that’s a pretty good indication you are improving. Or some people like to constantly test themselves chasing strava KOM’s.

But in general, building aerobic fitness is a long game. Real gains/results are best measured over months and years, not days and weeks. And often include steps forward and backward as you make progress.

Hey @Smiling_Cyclist

I would say that if you’re following a training plan and consistently rating the prescribed Interval workouts as Hard, this is a very good way to tell whether you’re seeing fitness improvements!

Also, the Power Records tool can be a great way to compare to past efforts and how you’re improving:
