A couple of kettlebells and bands can go a long way too.

Thanks for the love, hosting is nerve-wracking but Im so stoked to hear you all are digging the guests and format. We’ll keep it goin! ![]()
Ditto to all above, you ripped this episode. It’s one of the first in a looong time for me that I actually was excited to have a 2nd (and likely a 3rd) listen after finishing the 1st run. Well lead by you with great Hot Takes, and loved how you all handled each topic in good depth. ![]()
I got a laugh from the guys being like “we don’t need no stinking therapy” while the girls were “everyone can benefit from therapy”
This is so good to hear, thank you so much Chad!
I would actually love some more feedback on the depth at which we cover ‘Hot Takes’. (Anyone on this thread is free to provide input!)
The nature of those ‘Hot Take’ submissions could really go either way; we could give really brief feedback and reactions, or choose a few to cover more in-depth.
Would it be a good idea to have Chad do a small ‘deep dive’ on some that are well-suited for research?
1 per episode? Or none at all/keep the discussions fairly short but expand upon a couple topics?
Open to ideas from you all!
I like the hot takes and where there’s enough substance for Chad to do a shallower dive, I think that would be great. Frankly I prefer the hot takes to trivia. Trivia will never make me faster but an answer to a hot take might…
Per the other thread on it, I do think trivia can be leveraged in some ways, to relate to relevant training topics.
- What percentage of athletes complete a training phase at what TR classifies as a ‘pass’?
- I’m super curious to have completion defined, and then a more specific discussion about how TR thinks we can help that. Likely a repeat of elements already widely discussed, but combining them with TR data might help drive the points home.
That’s just one quick example, but I think there could be some good “trivia” related to training and racing that have elements to expand on in ways similar to the hot takes.
I think the depth on the last episode was right on.
Personally, I think a deep dive would throw off the flow. If you did include one, I think having it at the end would be best to keep the rest of topics more light hearted. However, I think an “abridged” deep dive could be interesting. As an example, for one of the topics this episode I think you said “I wish Chad was here” (I think it was the one on body weight lifting). I’d be interested in knowing only the results from literature, if any, that help form Chad’s opinion.
I have to say that I’m totally with Keegan about not leaving bikes outside unattended when going into a gas station (or anywhere, for that matter… not even a coffee shop). If I’m solo, I bring the bike in with me. Doesn’t matter what weird looks I get. If I act like I belong and this is the most natural thing, people generally won’t say anything.
I thought this was just about perfect. You went into some things slightly more in depth when the conversation warranted it (and it felt quite spontaneous), and others were just fast (and appropriately so). I don’t think this could be the full format very often, but this was terrifically fun, and I found myself laughing, nodding or shaking my head in agreement or disagreement, and saying “eeyew” multiple times. I am not a fan of the trivia, for the record. Maybe the way Chad McNeese has suggested it to be modified would be better, but I find the trivia to be basically a time-filling waste.
I would be ok with a shallow dive on a topic as needed, but much prefer the shorter takes and personal experience stories
The quick reaction format is what keeps the episode moving. I appreciated the “deep dive” into Hannah’s FKT but I feel getting into research is best served on the other shows. I appreciate the athlete perspective. Research is good but the athlete brings real world perspective and doing so for a quick reaction really makes the episode great. I also liked in episode 390 when Jonathan was talking about the challenges of riding after work and the stress it puts in his wife and the discussion that followed. We need more of that real world stuff!
Is there a way to submit not takes?
One of my favorite episodes so far! Love the format!
You should see me with my jeans tucked in and my kids’ trailer in tow! I get more attention than if I were in a purple Lamborghini. (No joke, kids’ trailers are super rare in Japan.)
PS Can I emphasize once more how fun this episode was? Some of the banter was pure gold (“If anyone but Keegan did this …”
). You are really getting the hang of hosting a podcast!
Hot takes used to mean short takes, but the first hot take turned into a hot dive from Jonathan (hey, passion topic?), and was there a deep take (contentious issue, discussed deeply). I almost got whiplash with the progression from “there should be no rules” to “that sock position is WRONG”
But yes, very entertaining and somewhat informative. Tick, tick.
When I think of the Hot Take podcast format, what I want to hear is interesting people disagreeing with passion, not rational analysis of the correct answer. So I’d pre-qualify the listeners’ takes to make sure that the guests are going to argue about it to some extent. Nobody wants to hear everyone agree that they like the Giro better than the Tour (which is demonstrably incorrect, sorry @chad).
I’d also enjoy having the guests bring their own takes. They definitely have them, and they know which ones will spark a debate. Like when I bring up the fact that Jurassic Park sucks, I know I’m going to be getting some abuse for a little while.
For trivia, I think the numeric questions tend to be a little more boring and feel like a guessing game (is Wout’s FTP 450, 460, or 470?). I enjoy ones that remind us of some cycling history or reveal a surprising fact. The one about what nations have the most MTB World Cup wins was perfect; the one about How Many Episodes Has Chad Been On was fun. How about “on which team has Mark Cavendish won the most Grand Tour stages?” “Besides Eddy Merckx, what TdF winner has won the most monuments?” “who has more Monument wins, Julian Alaphillipe, Wout Van Aert, or the United States?”
I like that you’re trying different things and seeing what works. Ultimately, what I always enjoy the most is hearing the hosts and guests talk about the things that inspire them, whether that’s a training method, an FKT, or whatever. I don’t really listen to the podcast to educate myself, although it’s nice when that happens. I listen to feel a connection to people who care about the same things that I do. Thanks for everything you do, and keep it up.
Ok…now you crossed the line!! ![]()
I saved up hot takes for a particularly wearisome part of my week. I knew it would be a fun filled distraction and it was.
Thanks.
You all rule.
I’m so grateful for the constructive feedback, I’m sure you’re tired of hearing about ‘Constant Improvement’ but it really helps us a lot! ![]()
Right now this is done via instagram story. I post a ‘submit’ form on the TrainerRoad instagram, and I post a second one on my personal instagram.
Those are posted a couple days prior to the Hot Takes episode, but the IG stories do disappear after 24hours, so it’s a short window for athletes to submit.
We’re never short on submissions, but I do want to make sure everyone has a chance to submit Hot Takes on their own time. SO, to make sure we don’t clutter up the normal podcast submission channel, just feel free to message me on the Forum with your hot take, or DM me your hot take on instagram anytime to submit (@ivyaudrain is my handle).
Cheers, all. Lets keep this rollin! ![]()
