Help Us Track AI FTP Prediction Drops After Outside Workouts

I just unpinned that workout and we changed what we’re prescribing for tomorrow.

That didn’t change your upcoming prediction (it’s still 330).

I then went back to your endurance ride from the 26th, and changed your RPE survey back to easy, and the 330 prediction stuck, so either things have worked themselves out, or it was something else aside from the RPE survey that was directly affecting your prediction. :man_shrugging:

I am still having issues with this. The AI does seem to still be progressing my workout levels but my FTP is stagnant/dropping.

I posted last month in here that at the start of the training block the prediction said I was going to go up to like 202W FTP after he next four weeks. I passed all my workouts, I believe I gave every intervals session a hard or medium and every endurance ride was easy (except for a 100k ride I decided to do for fun after missing an entire recovery week due to having to order parts to fix a mechanical that, I admit, was ignoring the plan) and at the end of the block my FTP went down 2 watts.

Again, this month last week my prediction was something like 205W, and after quite little struggle on my interval workouts and marking them medium of hard the last two weeks it’s already back down to 195W for my prediction at the next update.

Now, the be fair, I did have a weekend camping trip a few weeks ago that affected my adherence to the plan and my next two weeks are blank due to a vacation so maybe it’s just related to that but those things have been in my calendar the whole time so it is a bit annoying to watch my FTP prediction go down after every workout despite feeling like I’m making progress.

I am okay with staff looking into my account to do your magic to see if there’s anything weird going on under the hood for me or if it really just is my slight alterations to the plans due to my vacations that are confusing the AI.

Fair point @eddie . You’re right. In the months now since TR has announced the bug, you have done as you describe.

But if you go back and read my “standard response” comment critically in its context, you’ll find I was describing the time period from Ai launch (roughly January) until you acknowledged the bug. In other words, surely during that time period there were people experiencing the bug but TR wasn’t acknowledging it.

  • Since you launched Ai with massive hype there has been a steady stream of users posting things didn’t seem right and the standard response from TR has been basically “you’re doing it wrong. The Ai knows better.” Now that’s funny.

It was my subsequent bullet points that covered the chronology since you acknowledged the bug.

Anyway. Those semantics aside, I’m looking forward to more transparency and accountability from TR soonest. Thanks.

Let’s use this whole messy situation as a great opportunity - for example, to explore and try other AI-based training platforms :rofl: Surprise! There’s life outside of TR!

I’ve been following this thread for a while and have to admit that I face the same issue/bug with outdoor rides and the way the AI FTP detection is affected.

I thought that, all of us who face the same problem, instead of relying to AI FTP detection, why don’t we do a “non AI” FTP ramp test, provided by TR, to see how we’re doing?

I mean, OK, it’s a feature that we would like to use, since we’re paying for it, though I don’t quite understand all the flack TR is catching regarding this issue. OK, there is a problem/bug. It causes the AI FTP detection not to work properly. They (TR) will fix it, eventually. In the meantime, do a ramp test to see how your FTP is progressing.:slightly_smiling_face:

This thread sums up my experience before the acknowledgment of the bug. 4 Successive AI FTP Decreases - Good plan compliance. Help/Roast Me Pls

After a long period off with serious illness, I have returned only doing indoor workouts and have not seen the same issues I did when doing primarily outdoor workouts …

Glad you are doing well, fitness will come back. Looks like AI is working solid for indoor training.

Not that simple. You can test your FTP or just set it if you want, the problem then comes for workouts that get Rx’d to you by TR AI. Because they can’t properly read the outdoor workouts it causes issues.

Case and point, AI FTP detection keeps telling me my FTP is 288 meanwhile it’s been validated multiple times through both testing and RPE its 310+. I can manually set my FTP in TR to 295, 310 whatever…

I then go do a TR prescribed plan workout OUTSIDE. 6x2min VO2 which “rates” as a 6.4. With a 295 FTP target wattage was 360-366 depending on the interval. I go knock out 390-400w each time. I come home, ride uploads, despite easily doing the Rx’d workout wattage if I put VERY HARD into the workout rating I then get a workout for next week at a lower VO2 “rating” of 5.4.

I did the workout, i did more than required but based on RPE it is EXACTLY how VO2 workouts should have felt, but the AI detection can’t seem to manage wattage over target and then harder difficulty rating.

So now i have to mess with the system, rate the workout easier, just so i can get a harder workout. And even if i rate the workout as HARD, i still get backwards progression next week. See below.

TR’s guidance has been to select a more difficult workout if you feel that’s the right choice, not adjust your FTP. The system is giving you less time at VO2 max because your FTP setting is giving you workouts the system thinks are dipping into anaerobic, probably why you’re rating the workout very hard.

Did you try not disassociating your ride from the workout? I think if you exceeded the targets, then you didn’t do the Rx anymore, which is fine, and you could rate it as it actually felt. I’d be curious to see what the system would do with the 6.4 shown as skipped and your workout with the accurate RPE on that day.

@Caro.Gomez-Villafane Is there a potentiall issue where, even when I do a workout outdoors I can still see a set of alternating power targets, but then the ‘Main Set’ description is very high level. Is the AI still looking at the more detailed prescription while I’m just working to ‘keep your power between X and Y for 49 minutes’? I put the screenshots in for reference.

Ok, but you should be able to do that.

Are you cool with me chatting about your training here in this thread? I’ve got a couple of questions for you.

Are you saying that the issue is the discrepancy between what the workout image is showing (lots of small ups and downs) and the actual workout prescription (power range instead of strict, changing intervals)?

Apologies if this has been covered but is the bug just related to pushed workouts done outside? Or is it a problem with associated workouts as well? Yesterday, I decided to do my 2 hour z2 outside but didn’t push the workout, just associated the ride with the workout after the fact. Today, after my normal 2 hr threshold, predicted FTP dropped by 8 watts. I understand yesterdays outside ride was pretty far from perfectly matching the prescribed workout and I did have 2 brief pauses today but find it hard to believe that would account for an 8 watt drop.

If so, so be it. Just thought I’d bring it up. Thanks TR team!

Yeah, I’m wondering which version of the workout the AI is assessing me on, or if it’s assessing me on either.

FYI - I’ve seen the TR team say we shouldn’t do this

If you’re doing the work outside, then it’s susceptible to the bug.

Can we chat about your training here? I’ve got a couple of questions.

It looks like you’re still set for a solid FTP increase at the moment. :+1:

Yeah sure. Totally happy with this increase and the increases I’ve been seeing after being stuck around 300 for a couple years. I had no delusions my prediction would stay around 340 (I think the initial prediction for this block was 344) but it’s usually a 1-2 watt trickle, not a big 8 watt drop. That’s why I brought it up.

Happy to chat and answer questions

Hey @Yep ! did want to add this just in case to help clarify/answer your concern.

The “alternating power targets vs. high-level Main Set description” gap you’re seeing is just how the workout gets simplified for outdoor display/execution.

What’s actually driving the FTP Prediction change is separate from that: AI FTP Detection looks directly at the power data from your outdoor ride file to estimate your current fitness. That happens independently of whether the workout itself was marked complete. So it’s entirely possible to have a “clean” outdoor ride and still see your predicted FTP shift, because the power profile of that ride (pacing, variability, time at intensity, etc.) is being read on its own terms, not against the original interval script.
