Gut Check TR Taper Week before A Race

Hey guys,

I’m wondering if TR has scheduled too much intensity for the five days before my A race (I deleted Mon/Wed’s Z2 rides, Wed is a travel day and I figured I’d need a full day off somewhere).

Thoughts?

Hey @AussieRider, the volume is pretty low, but still, hard start intervals two days out is kinda iffy. I think you are the best judge based on if this type of workout is helpful and if you recover quickly or not after a workout like this.

Me personally, I’d probably skip that Thursday workout and instead do some freestyle efforts during an endurance ride. At this point your fitness is what it is. I find some sharp efforts helpful in opening up and staying open.

With Levi’s as your goal event I would absolutely focus on carbing up properly.

Good luck, that event is a beast.

Hey @AussieRider

I mean, ideally you’ve done the work, so going with how you feel I think it’s the right call.

If Wednesday is a travel day (not sure how long) then maybe go on a spin Thursday to keep the legs active and then do openers Friday and race Saturday.

Thanks mate. Appreciate your input. Our thoughts are aligned. I fear the beast!

Thanks. Yes. Wednesday is a 7 hour drive. So will be pretty taxed by the end of it.

Hard to know without your past training, but listening to Pros on podcasts like TR - they seem to still stick with a taper week plan that makes sense to me. Plenty of recovery/rest but still riding, with one good workout the weekend before and then again early midweek. Similar to what I would do for Marathon running.
This week you have shown (pre-deleted workouts) looks much more like a B-Race taper. I would replace Thursday with Easy spin for 45min-60min.
Pretty much all the research i recall on this is that more rest is better than… more fatigue retention and fitness gains race week :stuck_out_tongue:
But then again maybe its the research I believe most lol
