GCN+ being closed, December 2023

Rough start to life post-GCN+. Avoiding paying for Flo as long as possible. Looked the race up on Youtube and had the result immediately spoiled by a Flo video in the results*. Not as bad as when you pay them for the privilege of having it spoiled in their app, but still.

  • not that the result was ever in doubt, let’s be real

I can’t believe they are still doing this. GCN fixed it early on and did a great job keeping results and spoilers to a minimum but Flo has been spoiling results for as long as I can remember.

Absolutely refuse to pay for that garbage, still remember when they advertised a monthly rate but then charged you for a full year.

I just discovered a browser extension called ‘Channel Blocker’ that seems to allow you to block the results from a channel while doing a search. I know it’s available for both Firefox and Chrome, maybe others. I just started using it, but I think it will stop Flo from spoiling races in the future.

Confirmed that vpn to UK from the US while using a UK Discovery+ account works. Just had a UK friend sign-up and share login. We were also able to sign-in and watch content simultaneously on 3 devices, but not sure if there’s a device/log-in limit.

Once I’m back home from festive holidays I’ll open partnership with someone from here as long as whoever piggybacks remains responsible for the whole VPN stuff.
AFAIK me being in Ireland should make for a seamless Discovery+ experience since before GCN+ I had no trouble registering with Eurosport Player.

Got this tip from another forum on how to watch UCI World Cup Events like today’s race.

To watch free you need to use a VPN and point your server at a country that is not receiving broadcasts. I am using Australia.

You can read this doc if you want to determine what countries are receiving broadcasts

https://assets.ctfassets.net/761l7gh…2122023_V2.pdf

Then go to Youtube UCI channel and you should see the live World cup races

https://www.youtube.com/@ucichannel

I run this on my iPad but you can use whatever device you wish with a VPN.

I am watching the 10th round that starts soon in Gavere. You can also watch the recording after the fact.

Came here to share the same, I’m in Brazil and the channel is available, so Brazil is another option to set the VPN

Has anyone in USA done this successfully yet?

I did it yesterday and, indeed, it was a pain but I got it to (mostly) work. I used hushed.com to get a UK phone number that can receive texts. This is important as some services (like Skype) don’t support texts in many countries.

I can now watch Discovery+ in a computer browser with a VPN extension, but not on my Google TV w/Chromecast device. Seems that Discorvery+ has different versions of their app for each country’s Google Play Store. IOW, you can’t just download the US Play Store version of their app and use it with a VPN. You have to change your Google Account to UK which will then give you a UK-version of the Play Store.

I briefly considered doing that but it looked like too much work. I tried a web browser app on my Google TV device and it was extremely frustrating to use and when I finally did get a race stream to load, it stuttered every five seconds. So I just plan to use it on my laptop connected to my bigscreen via HDMI.

How did you pay for Discovery+?

With a UK-based PayPal account that I sent money from my US-based PayPal account. I actually had to do two transfers as I didn’t factor in the fee for using a credit card. :person_facepalming:

To create my UK-based PayPal account it required a non-US number to receive a confirmation text. So I created one on Hushed, then once I got PayPal set up, I enabled 2-factor auth via an authenticator app, so hopefully, I won’t need that number any more as I only paid for one week of the Hushed number.

Like I said, it was kind of a pain, but I was motivated as I still have half the Tour and the whole Vuelta to watch during my winter training sessions. No spoilers, please!?

WVA won it all!

Doesnt paypal need and address associated to an account? Did you just do a random address ?

He made a uk paypal with the virtual uk phone number and then funded it by transferring funds from his US paypal account.

I had this idea so I’m glad @Bikr tried it out first. Kudos!

Right, but doesnt paypay require an address too?

Not sure. Maybe you just borrow one? Typing in some address would be the easy part.

Yes, I just used a random UK address. I entered “Bath” (since it’s the home of GCN ) in the PayPal address field, and it auto-suggested a bunch of valid addresses, similar to Google Maps search. So I just picked one that looked good. I think PayPal only uses it for tax reasons and shipping if you buy hard goods (which obviously, I won’t be doing).

I probably should have written a more complete step-by-step guide, but I thought someone else had earlier, and TBH, I wasn’t sure I did it the best/cheapest way. But hey, I got it to work and can now finish watching the grand tours!

I’ve watched a couple of cx races on YouTube. Having just the ambient sound is brilliant! Hearing the crowds roar is so much better than listening to commentators trying to fill an hour with mindless waffle.
Only downside is trying to avoid spoilers prior to watching.

This is stellar. I was able to watch some of the recent races in Antwerp and Namur this way. If you don’t do VPN from USA to Brazil or another country, the live replays are not even showing in the list of videos on the UCI youtube channel.
