GCN+ being closed, December 2023

Variety is reporting that Paramount is in talks to merge with Warner Bros.

Obviously that is all at a much higher level than our concerns over watching cycling, but it could obviously impact what and how we watch in the future…even as this current chapter is still kinda unresolved.

I think the net of this is that cycling is making this too hard for US folks. I’m not going to setup a foreign bank account, with all that entails / implicates for a tax perspective, just so I can watch cycling. We had it good for a while. I’m actually hoping viewership in the US craters as that is the only path I can see to the streaming services fixing this mess.

A little off the subject but it looks as though Warner isn’t done. I could definitely see more apps merging in the future.

Horner is going to be hosting Dateline by the end of Feb. Roll will be doing weather in the today show.

Edit. Froome will host home improvement shows focusing on tape measure reading for beginners

For those outside of the UK who want to stream Discovery+ content, I’ll try and summarize best I can here:

Step 1: Get a VPN.

  • You will need the VPN to browse content but also to create your Discovery+ account.
  • I’m currently using NordVPN. ExpressVPN and Mullvad are other good options.

Step 2: Create your Discopvery+ account.

  • Connect your VPN to a server in the UK
  • Open a web browser and create an account on Discovery+
At that point you are able to login but you have no content enabled.

Step3: Get a subscription.
That might be the most challenging part. Discovery+ only offers 2 options: Paypal or Credit card. Both need to be UK based. So here are your options:

  • a- Phone a friend. That’s what I did. I have a friend in the UK. I gave her my Discovery+ login info and she paid the subscription for me. I’ll be sending her money through my Wise account monthly.
  • b- Create a UK Based PayPall account. See Guyc’s post above.

Here’s what I tried which didn’t work:
My US Based paypal account.
My debit card from Wise, even though I have funded the account with UK pounds
My budy’s French credit card.

Step4: Watch some Cyclocross.
I thought this would be easy but I ran into one more issue: I am not able to stream content with Chrome. It works fine with Safari. I have not tried to debug that yet. Note that I’m only using an iPad. PC and Mac users might have more options / control.

I went that route because I know there is no Eurosprot app anymore and I’m hoping to watch this content on Apple TV (note that I still need to find a way to install the Discovery+ App on AppleTV). The Discovery+ subscritption is also a tad cheaper than Europsort.

So set up an appleTV as a Uk one (in the US), do you need to create a iTunes account that says it’s uk and have a uk credit card? Do I need the appleTV to connect through a VPN to sign it up as UK and when it’s running?

I think I’m doing the UK discovery+ with VPN and use it on my computer (so no iOS or fire stick app).

Coming at it from a different angle. Can anyone recommend a youtube channel that’ll show full cx races (doesn’t have to be live) with Dutch or Belgian commentary? The reality is all commentary is a bit blah anyway, but sounds more sophisticated in a foreign language

It can be hit and miss trying to find them on youtube but CyclocrossCX is the most consistent I’ve found. Depending on the race it’s sometimes the English Eurosport commentary but often no commentary at all, just the crowd noises etc. Good for the trainer with some music on at the same time

Content sometimes disappear, presumably due to rights issues, but then will reappear after a few days. The World Cup races from Namur are currently on there :+1:

I get this. Sometimes I really need the commentary to be going so I can just tell from the pitch of their voices if something exciting has suddenly happened and I need to start looking at the screen again.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticizing those willing/doing all that intricate pathway to watch Discovery+/Eurochannel/whatever, but I won’t.

It’s too many “uncomfortable” steps. Even with GCN using VPN was a pain as I had to plug my laptop on the TV.

I want to sit, turn the TV on and watch. That’s it. I’ll wait until the very last minute to decide, and if the options are really bad, I will stick with the best moments or some youtube thing.

It really is amazing how fast we become used to easier ways, and how quickly even minor issues become annoying.

It takes me less than a minute to fire up my VPN before launching GCN+, but every time it was like “oh, jeez…I gotta deal with this again?”

My problem was, that I didn’t have a VPN, I was using a free one, so I kept going, going, going…

Being free meant low speed and frequent dropouts.

Moving forward it’s safe to say you won’t be watching much cycling…

I was using a VPN on my phone and with the GCN+ app i’d mirror it to my tv, it had zero complexity.

I watched this morning and it was the same coverage as GCN+ (with Helen Wyman doing commentary). Main difference that I can tell compared to GCN+ is that sometimes coverage starts during women’s call-ups, but then just keeps running until the end of the men’s race–no separate links to click on.

Thanks for the add info. Looks like it’ll be flobikes for US
EDIT Scratch that, I just can’t do it. Going to see if I can follow the bread crumb postings here about how to set up a UK Discovery account.
