GCN+ being closed, December 2023

So set up an appleTV as a Uk one (in the US), do you need to create a iTunes account that says it’s uk and have a uk credit card? Do I need the appleTV to connect through a VPN to sign it up as UK and when it’s running?

I think I’m doing the UK discovery+ with VPN and use it on my computer (so no iOS or fire stick app).

Coming at it from a different angle. Can anyone recommend a youtube channel that’ll show full cx races (doesn’t have to be live) with Dutch or Belgian commentary? The reality is all commentary is a bit blah anyway, but sounds more sophisticated in a foreign language

It can be hit and miss trying to find them on youtube but CyclocrossCX is the most consistent I’ve found. Depending on the race it’s sometimes the English Eurosport commentary but often no commentary at all, just the crowd noises etc. Good for the trainer with some music on at the same time

Content sometimes disappear, presumably due to rights issues, but then will reappear after a few days. The World Cup races from Namur are currently on there :+1:

I get this. Sometimes I really need the commentary to be going so I can just tell from the pitch of their voices if something exciting has suddenly happened and I need to start looking at the screen again.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticizing those willing/doing all that intricate pathway to watch Discovery+/Eurochannel/whatever, but I won’t.

It’s too many “uncomfortable” steps. Even with GCN using VPN was a pain as I had to plug my laptop on the TV.

I want to sit, turn the TV on and watch. That’s it. I’ll wait until the very last minute to decide, and if the options are really bad, I will stick with the best moments or some youtube thing.

It really is amazing how fast we become used to easier ways, and how quickly even minor issues become annoying.

It takes me less than a minute to fire up my VPN before launching GCN+, but every time it was like “oh, jeez…I gotta deal with this again?”

:man_shrugging:t2: :man_shrugging:t2:

My problem was, that I didn’t have a VPN, I was using a free one, so I kept going, going, going…

Being free meant low speed and frequent dropouts.

Moving forward it’s safe to say you won’t be watching much cycling…

I was using a VPN on my phone and with the GCN+ app i’d mirror it to my tv, it had zero complexity.

If this works for anyone, please let us know

Does the evil flobikes broadcast both the women’s and men’s cx races?

Yes

thanks Want to watch cx this month and next May try monthly sub. and hope their service has improved since 2018 although the full year plus peacock will cover the next year

I watched this morning and it was the same coverage as GCN+ (with Helen Wyman doing commentary). Main difference that I can tell compared to GCN+ is that sometimes coverage starts during women’s call-ups, but then just keeps running until the end of the men’s race–no separate links to click on.

Thanks for the add info. Looks like it’ll be flobikes for US
EDIT Scratch that, I just can’t do it. Going to see if I can follow the bread crumb postings here about how to set up a UK Discovery account.

Rough start to life post-GCN+. Avoiding paying for Flo as long as possible. Looked the race up on Youtube and had the result immediately spoiled by a Flo video in the results*. Not as bad as when you pay them for the privilege of having it spoiled in their app, but still.

  • not that the result was ever in doubt, let’s be real

I can’t believe they are still doing this. GCN fixed it early on and did a great job keeping results and spoilers to a minimum but Flo has been spoiling results for as long as I can remember.

Absolutely refuse to pay for that garbage, still remember when they advertised a monthly rate but then charged you for a full year.

I just discovered a browser extension called ‘Channel Blocker’ that seems to allow you to block the results from a channel while doing a search. I know it’s available for both Firefox and Chrome, maybe others. I just started using it, but I think it will stop Flo from spoiling races in the future.

Confirmed that vpn to UK from the US while using a UK Discovery+ account works. Just had a UK friend sign-up and share login. We were also able to sign-in and watch content simultaneously on 3 devices, but not sure if there’s a device/log-in limit.

:eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes:

Once I’m back home from festive holidays I’ll open partnership with someone from here as long as whoever piggybacks remains responsible for the whole VPN stuff.
AFAIK me being in Ireland should make for a seamless Discovery+ experience since before GCN+ I had no trouble registering with Eurosport Player.
