Garmin Rally Power Meter Pedals: Look Road, Shimano Road & MTB

Never broken one clean off but smashed plenty of them in similar spots on shimano pedals and mangled the adjustment bolt.. .

Hi there,

I’ve been using the left sided Rallies XC (XC100) on my gravel bike. I would like to upgrade my right side pedal as well and I have a question.

The upgrade kit for the SPD-SL version(RS100) costs 385€ in Germany, whereas the SPD version (XC100) costs 500€. I was wondering if I can use the non-power pedal body from my current right pedal (XC) and take the spindle from the cheaper RS100 in order to convert it.

Does anyone know if the pedal bodies are the same between the power meter and the non-powermeter versions of the pedals? They also sell just pedal bodies without spindle but in the product description it is not clear for me if these can only be used for conversion with powermeter spindles or also with the non-sensor spindles.

The difference will be in the battery cap/internal battery holder - they are not compatible between road and XC pedal bodies.

That was also my concern, thank you.

Hi, I am considering to purchase a second hand xc100.

After some research is no clear to me (or I might have missed) if:

  • the issue is present also on the xc100
  • the issue has been solved since @gpl reported it in his in-depth review.

Thanks!

A. We software came out a few days ago that is supposed to address this problem and more.

New update seems great. Previously my RS200 would start to put out slightly different numbers (5-10 watts) than my Kickr Core as room temperature rised. Had a 4h trainer ride yesterday where Kickr and Rally reported exactly the same values for the whole ride. Room temperature did rise by 4°C.

I agree, I had always had to recalibrate on rides that started out cool and warmed up. Yesterday started out at 65*F and warmed to mid 90’s and the power seemed to stay consistent with what it should have been rather than reporting too high like in the past.

@gpl @dcrainmaker,

Curious as to calibration. When calibrating the Rally’s(xc200) the calibration is ‘stored’ on the pedals, not the device calling for the calibration, correct?

Reason I ask, I’ve got a big event in August, that will require changing from one bike to the other, I’ve got the ability to borrow a second set of pedals and curious if I could have my crew calibrate them, before I roll up, or if I would need to calibrate them with my headunit?

I’m not those guys but if they have access to the garmin connect app, I’m pretty sure you can calibrate the pedals. As long as the pedals are synced with the garmin app your teammates are using.
Look under “garmin devices”, make sure the pedals are awake. Then you should be able to calibrate in the app.

Yea, they can also use any of the headunits they have as well, I just want to be sure that the calibration is stored on the pedal, and not the device calling for the calibration.

Awesome! Thanks!

…and, while we’re at it. A reminder that the crank length is also stored on the pedals, unless it’s overwritten by a head unit.

Meaning, by default virtually every bike computer/watch that supports the crank length command will be set for 172.5mm. Thus, if you configured the pedals on a different head unit (or the app) for a different crank length (e.g. 175mm or 170mm), and then use a new bike computer without changing it, it’ll change your pedal crank length.

(Even more, if you use a watch + bike computer, such as a triathlete, remember to set it correctly in both places, as two crank lengths arguing can often lead to dropouts…)

Thanks for that reminder!

What’s the sentiment about the newest software update and temp calibration? Resolved issues making it a solid option to recommend to athletes? @gpl are you still reticent to give them a thumbs up?

Thanks. I’ll stick with recommending Power2Max and Favero.

anecdotal, but, Went for a ride this morning and the garage was a solid 10+ degrees warmer than outside, I calibrated before I left the garage, and again when I finished my ride. the values given at the end of the ride were +/- .06 at the end which are normal post calibration numbers for my set of XC200’s, Before the new FW, they would show a +/-1.x in that scenario at the end of the ride.

Yeah, I’m learning to deal with that. My old bike on the trainer has 175mm cranks, and my road bike has 172,5mm. I have to be careful not powering up my Edge 520 at the same time as my Assiomas if they are on the trainer - as soon as they connect (one floor away in the house) it overrides the crank length. Last time that happened was me loading a TR outside workout on my Edge right after fixing something on the trainer bike; that had activated the pedals, and they were still up when I powered the Edge up.

@ Cory.Rood Thanks.

Hey guys! I’ve been experiencing drop outs on my garmin rally xc100. Have you guys experienced this? Could this be an issue with the pins not making contact? Or cleaning the pins?
