Garmin Edge 1050 Released

That’ll teach them to actually try pairing when surrounded by 1,000s of power meters. Instead of doing it at home when you are not going to pick up other sensors.

They usually are, but the one I went to, before they installed the flame thrower, would get really paranoid if you looked too hard at their bikes. THey would have the lights up until a few minutes before the start. (One of the LBS serviced the bikes from a gym in a neighboring town, and one day one of the managers was venting about an issue with the gym complaining about costs. He went into some detail on the ‘stuff’ they find in and on the bikes. They started leaving spare bottom brackets there until some disappeared. The one I used had bikes with pedals essentially no bearings left. Not too many, but there were always a few. I get that it’s expensive to do PM, but what was I paying for? The flame thrower?)

You would think. Most people just avoided the whole thing. On a group ride, I did run into a noob that thought he had to pair sensors each time he rode. Well, yeah, you can do that, but your computer can actually remember that kind of stuff for you. He was getting a sea of sensors to chose from. I’m glad he asked me for help. There’s never a stupid question, mostly…

I’ve only had the 1040 for a year. The 1050 looks nice but there’s nothing mind blowing to justify me upgrading at this point. The 1040 battery life is amazing and it already does more than I need

I am looking forward to steep Black Friday 1040 Solar deals. I can live without Garmin Pay…

The real question: has anyone actually used Garmin Pay? Serious question. I can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t have Apple Pay, and would actually use Garmin Pay

I tried setting it up when I got my Forerunner 955, saw that not one of my credit cards were supported, and haven’t looked at it since.

I’ve used Garmin pay a few times, I don’t think it’s currently setup anymore on my watch but I run with no phone or wallet and stopped into store before and used it.

Don’t have apple pay.

I tried but none of my cards are supported. Garmin says they are but they bank has no idea how to make it work. I got trapped in an infinite loop of contact your bank>contact Garmin>contact your bank…

I bought a watch with music, maps, and GP, mostly because I wanted to run without carrying a phone or cards. It’s not a big deal but it’s annoying.

Having it in a computer is a nice backup. I hope that Garmin can get it to work with more cc companies.

I sometimes had to with my 1040, especially after stopping for a cafe ride. Only way I could re pair to my power meter was take out of standby, switch unit off, back on then repair. Hope the 1050 will be better but I suspect their forums will be busy …

Happy with my 1040 “non-solar”. In Finnish summer, there’s not that much use for the solar feature, especially as I use the unit on a handbike in a vertical position.

Not everyone has an iPhone. Yes, I have used Garmin pay. Works well at store check out. Doesn’t work for me at gas pumps.

I use it as a backup, that’s it. It’s on my watch in case my phone dies…which, occasionally happens out on runs/rides.

In many ways, I see it the same way on the Edge 1050. Will most people use it daily? Of course not. But just like that $10/10EUR bill in your saddlebag, it’s there in case you need it. It costs Garmin virtually nothing to add (since they acquired the payment processing company, and NFC comes on most of the chipsets they’d use anyway), and inversely, is an easy feature the competition can’t add.

Yes, I am having so many issues with the 1040 that I was not expecting. It keeps ignoring my GARMIN HRM strap, and refuses to sync with my iPhone. Somehow, I think it was when I got in range of my home wifi, it synced (I had an 8x0 that would do that too, syncing as I was pulling in the driveway, but it didn’t have the ‘connectivity features’ that the 10x0 series has, so what gives?). Otherwise, the entire time I saw the arrow circle just spinning, and it would stop, and nothing. Not picking up the strap is amazing. On my Mac Mini, it’s picked up in seconds, the Edge seems to just be tone deaf to a degree. I don’t remember these issues with the 1030, or earlier models. I still have my 1030, and might just see if I can return the 1040 and go back to the old reliable rather than the ‘new hotness’. I’m disappointed. I’ll try a hard reset and see if I can get the 1040 to work better, but it’s not impressing me.

From moment one, when I connected the 1040 to Garmin Connect, it started off bad with updates not installing easily. I had to delete the existing maps just to get it to update. The firmware update took a couple times to happen with the 1040 restarting a couple times before it actually did the update. It just seems ‘off’, and with what I paid for it, and the history of Edge usability, I’m not impressed…

Would the 1050 be worth the increase in price, and decrease in battery capacity?

This sounds like a warranty issue to me. I’ve been using mine for well over a year and it’s been pretty much flawless, both in terms of overall connectivity and larger issues.

It has one quirk that annoys me a bit (if I bring it into my office to charge or tinker with and turn it on, it keeps trying to connect to the Varia that’s still in the basement, giving me constant disconnect–>reconnect–>disconnect–>etc messages), but that’s really just a me problem.

I’ve had a single spontaneous reboot about 2.5 hours into a 4 hour ride, but it immediately reconnected and continued the ride, with the reboot showing up as a barely noticeable blip.

That said, I’ve definitely had other problems with Garmin devices and their support’s been very good. I was able to do a warranty swap with a Forerunner I was having problems with, and they sent me the replacement before I had to send in the old one so I wasn’t without a watch. They just put a charge on my card until they received the old one, then it was removed right after they got it.

Honestly, considering the higher price tag and the drop in battery life, I’d say the Garmin Edge 1050 might not be worth it. If you’re dealing with issues on the 1040 and battery life is important for your rides, sticking with what you have or looking at other options could save you some hassle

Personally I think there are too many ways to ‘pay’, and my data is being spread around to too many places. This will come back to haunt us. But the idea that I would carry my Edge, that has the ability to be a ‘bike alarm’ if my bike is abused, is ridiculous. It seems to be a divergent feature set. But anyone that doesn’t carry a credit card, or cash is delusional. Nothing beats cash in the case of an emergency, or unexpected mechanical. I’ve not seen ANY store around here advertising Garmin Pay. Sorry, if I’m going to be stranded, I’d rather it be because I forgot cash rather than depending on a payment service no one supports. Garmin Pay isn’t a feature I’d give a rip about. What Garmin could do is add Apple Tag support.

I set up Garmin pay on my Epix when I first got it. The first time I used it, I realized it’s a major PITA to click on the hot key I set up, enter a pin on a watch, and check out. I was feeling stressed as I clicked away while others were waiting behind me in line. It’s just difficult to use compared to double clicking on my iPhone, quickly looking at the face, and holding it out to pay.

As Ray said though, it’s nice to have available in an emergency.

I will take it up with Garmin if the reset doesn’t bring it around. I remember there was a way to completely wipe an Edge unit, so I’ll try to do that. :person_shrugging:

Nobody is leaving their bike outside for days this way. The simple idea for a bike alarm is a cafe stop where you and your friends have your bikes lines up, likely overlapping (because, most cafes don’t have endless space). Your bike is probably within view of you, but maybe not watching the entire time. This way, if someone touches your bike (to start to move it), it’ll trigger and both audibly scream and if you’re within BT range, ding your phone too. None of this stuff is earth shattering, but it’s handy in the right situations.

No store needs to advertise Garmin Pay. It’s just an NFC payment. As long as they take Apple Pay or any other NFC payment, it’ll work just fine (which, in my experience travelling around the world…is basically every store on the planet post-COVID…well…except Walmart because they want their own crazy payment system.)

I do agree I’d like to have Apple FindMy support, and kinda surprised we haven’t seen Garmin add it anywhere yet.
