Garmin Edge 1050 Released

Any device transmitting ANT+ is broadcasting like a radio station, and anyone can connect. Not unique to Varia radar. If your power meter is broadcasting on ANT+, your friends could connect to that too!

I knew it could, but no one wanted to do it. No idea why not. I think it was that annoying, somehow. But if some Edge units only supported one volume setting, I could see it being even more annoying, but perhaps they could have turned the volume off.

I thought some were encrypted, and some people would connect to the wrong device too. Oops…

Definitely. It just didn’t occur to me to do it with the radar and someone else’s device.

try going to a gym with Stages power meter stationary bikes, connect to the wrong PM and mayhem ensues!

It could be annoying if there’s a lot of traffic…

Some of my friends actually appreciated the warning but it took us more than I’d like to admit to realize they could just connect to the radar.

My gym figured a way to avoid this problem. They refuse to fix the bikes so they are mechanical resistance only now.

A friend of mine was airlifted off the bridge after a collision with a tourist walking on the wrong side of the bridge. He broke his back.
I think you would need a fog horn. 1060?

Or just have the ability to yell really fucking loudly like I can

Sorry for your friend - that is really my fear: get hit by a tourist trying to take a selfie and swerving, especially on windy days

Like I said, I had offered but everyone passed. :person_shrugging:

I hope this doesn’t happen often, but at a race, someone figured out they connected to the wrong power meter and was swearing and throwing a fit for some childish reason. Made somewhat of a scene over it. :person_facepalming: :flushed::face_with_peeking_eye:

My Garmin has paired with a handful of Stages bikes at the gym. The classes are mostly women with FTPs in the 80-120W range. So when its happened to me, I’m doing like 150W warmup and look down at my Garmin and see 40W :scream:

That and blaring headphones! Years ago I passed a PYT with over ear headphones on, and I could hear the music as I approached. She flinched and my heart skipped a beat ā€˜Don’t jump in front of me you twit!’. I had yelled and would have thought that she might have heard me. Stupid human tricks? Who pays for her hearing aids? WHAT!!!

Maybe carry a marine air horn? Or a ā€˜bear horn’? 130db of ON YOUR LEFT!!! :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Hah… Funny. You could find the ID for the bike you’re on, but it’s kind of a pain, especially if the sticker is munged or gone. Oh, unless they only do drive side.

Spin room is dark so you have to pull out your phone and shine a light to read ANT ID off the sticker on the crank.

That’ll teach them to actually try pairing when surrounded by 1,000s of power meters. Instead of doing it at home when you are not going to pick up other sensors.

They usually are, but the one I went to, before they installed the flame thrower, would get really paranoid if you looked too hard at their bikes. THey would have the lights up until a few minutes before the start. (One of the LBS serviced the bikes from a gym in a neighboring town, and one day one of the managers was venting about an issue with the gym complaining about costs. He went into some detail on the ā€˜stuff’ they find in and on the bikes. They started leaving spare bottom brackets there until some disappeared. The one I used had bikes with pedals essentially no bearings left. Not too many, but there were always a few. I get that it’s expensive to do PM, but what was I paying for? The flame thrower?)

You would think. Most people just avoided the whole thing. On a group ride, I did run into a noob that thought he had to pair sensors each time he rode. Well, yeah, you can do that, but your computer can actually remember that kind of stuff for you. He was getting a sea of sensors to chose from. I’m glad he asked me for help. There’s never a stupid question, mostly…

I’ve only had the 1040 for a year. The 1050 looks nice but there’s nothing mind blowing to justify me upgrading at this point. The 1040 battery life is amazing and it already does more than I need

I am looking forward to steep Black Friday 1040 Solar deals. I can live without Garmin Pay…
