Full Ironman Taper

Hi everyone, competing in ironman Jacksonville next weekend, and have used trainerroad for a 70.3 as well. From what I can tell, for triathlons the taper is a bit funky, still providing a decent amount of intensity even going into race week. Has anyone had this experience? Still followed?

Welcome to the forums.

There are all sorts of ideas out in the world about tapering for IM, but it all predicates on your training and how consistently you’ve been building load over the previous 16-32 weeks, how athletic you are, and how many full distance Ironman events you’ve done.

If your race is next weekend, then I’d hope you finished your longest run a week or two back. Either way, the hay is in the barn. The next eight days are just about recovery and freshness for race day.

Some people freak at the idea of a quality session in the final week, but if you have been consistently getting through these for months then the smaller version offered are just helping you peak.

Just have fun. A bit of race pace here and there just so you remember how that feels like, but just a little. If you decide not to do it you will be fine as well. I just really appreciated being familiar with race pace.

And good luck!
