Planning for my A event, these aren’t races but I do want to complete in a good style, at pace and not hanging out my arse. I’m planning to aim for around 70g to 90g of carbs per hour, mixed between chews/occasional flapjack and bottles. No gels unless I stop at a feed stop and grab one, because they’ve always been an item of last resort, gumming up my mouth!
I think to get that much in without overdoing it and causing gut issues, I’ll be eating every 45 mins and making sure I finish the Styrkr bottle before the next stop. 18kph avg puts it at 5:20, which even with the off-road UK style gravel sections should be very attainable, and I’d hope to be closer to 5 hours.
This means I’m prob carrying enough fuel, but wondering how much excess people race with for blow-ups, mechanicals taking a bit or even shitty weather slowing it all down. I’ve got an extra 45 mins buffer planned, but could carry 2 or 3 feeds more than that since I’ll be running a Camelbak, which means I’m not limited by what I can shove in pockets.
Camelbak is only cos I’m a sweaty boy and often come home covered in salt, which means I can carry more liquid but open to suggestions not to and run my 3-bottle option and just make sure I top up at the stops. I do need to test it with a jersey to see if I can get to my food; if I can’t, well, that decision is out of my hands.
