FTP prediction changes

Hey everyone, wondering if anyone else is seeing this or if this is just for me. I have found when I do a Vo2 max/ anaerobic workout my ftp PREDICTION, usually goes up by several watts, but every time I do a threshold and under it will go down by several watts. Is this because I generally have a stronger anaerobic physiology? That’s my assumption and is historically true. Although I train for longer events I’m in the top percentiles for sprinting/vo2 max powers. I’m wondering if the AI will learn this more over time and have less swings in predictions in the future. It has swayed by about 10 watts without any significant change in my plan.

Are the VO2 / Anaerobic workouts you’re doing prescribed or self assigned?
It could be where you are in your plan. For example: if your goal race is 12 weeks out then you may be building more of a base and your ftp may increase a little more slowly.
I’m currently in the “base phase” and I switched my next threshold workout for a VO2 Max workout and my AI FTP Prediction increased.

It could also have something to do with your previous workouts. To your point, it may learn you more over time.

Just some thoughts.

Welcome to the forums!

I think it’s fair to say that predictions are fluctuating and as a community we’re still coming to grips with that.

I’ve mailed support over a couple of queries, but the main thing is to be training consistently - if you are failing workouts a lot then get concerned.

Otherwise, it helps to post up for last four weeks calendar for context.

Thanks for the reply. I am using suggested workouts currently and start a plan on Feb 2nd. I sometimes may change the duration but am sticking to what is scheduled. If I stick to the exact workout in the calandra though it still tends to give me higher predictions after finishing higher intensities then before doing the workouts and the opposite is true with easier ones.

overall I guess not really a big deal. Just wasn’t sure if this was typical of everyone or more of a personal experience.

I think you could be correct though, may just have to do with the type of workout completed. Some will move the needle more than others. Overall the workouts have felt perfect and have not failed any.

I cancelled a ride that was on a red day. fTp prediction went up by 10 immediately. Then overnight, down 8 with no reasoning or logic.

Now it progressively drops 1 watt after each workout I complete.

I woke up and was rewarded with another overnight watt decrease for the prediction.
