AI FTP Prediction Change

I had my FTP increase training planned out for 4 months and I am now in the 2nd week of base phase. AI FTP prediction originally says my FTP would increase from 285w to 290w in 28 days with planned workouts. I mean this looks great and I was super-pumped to follow the plan. Two days ago I tweaked one SST training session (“Blagdon”) higher during the last rep since I was feeling great and still completed the workout flawlessly. FTP prediction remained the same after the ride. Then yesterday I felt a bit sore in the leg and also I had to work overtime, so I cut short the Endurance workout which was supposed to be 2.75hr at 60%FTP+/- (see screenshots below). I cut it after 1hr-ish and rated it easy. Then today when I rechecked the AI FTP prediction, it suddenly changed from a predicted FTP increase to a decrease to 275w (-3.5%). This doesn’t look good and I kinda lost hope in the training plan. Is this really just b/c I cut short an easy endurance ride? Or is that the AI tweaked my workouts that will decrease my FTP? Curious of what you all experience. Thanks.

I would ask in the beta thread, it’s not publicly available yet and you will probably get a better answer there.

Hey @Zizhao_He

I like to use the analogy of the weather forecast when I think of AI FTP Prediction. As you start getting closer to that prediction it becomes more and more accurate.

In your case, what I am seeing is that you’ve just started with the plan + the prediction is still ways away haha. So the changes you are already having their effect as we can see.

In your example, this goes to show that doing more is not always best. Changing the SS to a harder workout consequently had it’s impact on your Endurance ride the following day, and the trend shows on your FTP Prediction. Having the right training vs. recovery balance in your training, especially with your training volume is key to allow your body to keep improving without overdoing it. I think trying to follow what’s being prescribed instead of changing it to do more may benefit you best.

I also see that all your interval workouts are pinned like Nangpai. When you pin workouts, the system won’t adjust them to give you the best recommended workout for that day. I can see this as being another way you may be impairing gains by not letting the AI Training Simulation do it’s thing. I would try and give the system a full trust without changing things to see what happens :see_no_evil_monkey:

I think Caro is way more of a diplomat than me - so I may be evicted shortly. And I cannot see more than what is on the screenshots.

But wait… you override TRAI in 2 of 3 days’ workouts, incl pinning a workout that is labelled by TRAI as “Not recommended”. And then you question TRAI for a decline in FTP prediction?!

It is simply doing it’s job by indicating a potential rabbit hole. That is what the prediction model in my mind is about. You can play around and see what will work and what not - and it’s your decision what you want to change or not.

But then you can’t blame/question TRAI if you keep overriding it… It’s like me not always having time because of standby to do the scheduled 90 min midweek workouts. I can (and have to) change those at times. It now simply spells out the consequences.

Also agree that beta feature discussions does not belong in public. And FTP predictions is a beta beta.

Thank you for the insights! I was thinking some of the AI recommended workouts WL is low and I manually tweaked to harder workouts. I will stop that now.

I was thinking some rides WL is lower than I would like to see and tweaked to harder ones. I will change back then.

Also curious if maybe something changed with the way they’re doing this? I had mine drop a few watts, not a concerning amount, but the odd thing was I was on work travel and hadn’t been riding. The work travel was on the calendar. So literally nothing has changed since the original assessment on my side but it dropped me a few watts.

Not to hijack this but @Caro.Gomez-Villafane - Could that be the case or is something else going on there?

Hey @Tvandelinder  Sorry, I am just seeing this!

But yes, not having anything planned for those days could be the reason for the drop in watts. However, I see that your Prediction has changed already since you started completing workouts again

The Predicted FTP is like a way of looking into the future, so if say, you don’t have anything planned for the next 28 days, your predicted FTP will most likely decrease haha. We can see that adding the work trip did have it’s impact. Again, that’s why I like the weather analogy!

No worries on the delay, not really an issue, just trying to understand.

Which I do get what you are saying but the work trip was already on the calendar before the prediction. Shouldn’t that be taken into account as part of that initial calculation? Would completely expect it to change if it was a last minute and I went from a full week of workouts to nothing.

I see.. I will let Sean take the lead on this one as I know he’s looking into it per the Beta thread

Where is the beta thread? I just joined and immediately have a bunch of things not working

@burnett2k I just sent you a DM hoping to get a bit more information on the issues you are experiencing.

AI detected 293 today after a ramp test on Sunday 1/11 at 274. And AI FTP Prediction is saying after 20 more workouts I will be…the same. Will get a few workouts in and see if this updates.

I say keep using the AI and complete some workouts. It will update the number as you go. My prediction actually went back to 290 and was bouncing between 291/292/293 after workouts. Overall it’s just a guessing number. I am curious what the AIFTP detection will actually be in 2 weeks.
