Favero Assoima bearing replacements not fitting - old style pedals?

I bought an Assioma Uno back in 2020. It recently started reading erratically. Doing the typical remove from bike, clean, callibrate process didn’t fix the problem.

I opened up the pedal and the bearings inside were pretty shot so I sealed it back up and, given the pedal body was also pretty shot, ordered the replacement pedal body. The replacement body includes all the bearings and nuts etc.

I watched this video to work out what to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZm1e6YHSf8

And therein things got interesting  When I stripped my old pedal down, only 2 bearings were in the pedal instead of three. At first I thought maybe the older bearing had really just disintegrated :person_shrugging:

But after I followed the re-assembly instructions I realised that the spindle from my original pedal would not fit all the way through the new pedal if I put all three bearings in - it only fits if you use two. Further, the supplied oil retainer didn’t fit either - I had to use the one originally supplied with the pedal.

I have now reassembled the pedal using only two bearings and the original oil retainer. The bearings do fit into the pedal, it’s just that not all three can fit, only two.

For reference, this is the list of bearings supplied with the pedal: Assioma DUO/UNO | Bearings Set | favero-cycling

Also, the spindle from my original pedal doesn’t look like the current spindle: Assioma DUO/UNO | Left sensor | favero-cycling. My spindle has two additional “bumps” near the bottom.

I have two questions:

  1. Has anyone with an Assioma had this experience before? Mostly I just want to know I’ve put it back together alright
  2. Does anyone know the size of the oil retainer? I’d like to buy a new one but have no idea how to size it

I had never thought about replacing bearings until I saw this. I bought my pedals in 2018. I don’t ride in dirt or rain but 6 years is still a good amount of time. Curious what everyone says here.

They’re super easy to pull apart. Probably will take you 20 minutes to go in and check yourself.

Full props to Favero for making a repairable product :facepunch:

I have exactly the same problem. Do you experience any problems?
And do you also have some rings, before the two bumps, that cant be removed?

I’ve had to replace my bearings 2x in 4 years, the inside bearings were absolutely destroyed. Fortunately I found out before my spindle was ruined

Pics, especially of spindel and inside of pedal?

What does Favero say? It could be an ‘update’ they did due to reliability issues, but they should have some way of handling it for users like you who are caught in the same issue.

You could end up begging for more problems in the near future by doing what you’ve discovered. Just saying…

I think those “bumps” are the inner rings of your bearings but contact favero for assistance

I agree with @ArHu74 - I think what you have there is a mix of the inner parts of the original bearings bound in place and some significant gouging into the spindle.

I’ve had multiple units since 2018 an non look different to the current design.

Contact Favero, I think that spindle is a write-off but they may sell you a cut price replacement?

EDIT: they did at one point change the style of the oil retainer - but not the spindle.

Check this GPLama vid on conversion to SPD bodies. Lot’s of spindle/bearing pix of the original style pedals. I’ve done this and gone back and forth between the road and spd bodies a number of times with my Duos purchased in Mar 2019.

And I swapped to Ultegra bodies and didn’t have an y problems except that the ‘seal’ didn’t quite work as they suggested. I swapped back to the original bodies, and they have been in a bin on the shelf. :cowboy_hat_face:
