Anyone else experiencing some scoring and pitting on the axle of their pedals?
I gave my set a grease service after 1 year and 2500 km of use on my road bike. I noticed scoring and pitting on the axles. See the image. You can catch the deeper scoring with a finger nail. I’ve raised a support request with Favero but I want to get a feel for if this is a common thing. I feel like the is quite light use even if I ride these pedals in all weathers. I’d prefer to not spend the money on a new set of pedal bodies after only a year but I think it might be my only choice to get fresh bearings and try shorter service intervals.
So what’s your experience been?
Looks fine and you should not need to replace bodies anyway, the bearings are replaceable. Put them back together with some good grease and stop worrying
I disagree. As a rule of thumb, bearing races with scratches that catch a fingernail are not normal wear. It means that debris got into the pedal body. After not much use and not particularly bad conditions too, this doesn’t sound unreasonable.
Also, I probably won’t have an option to replace the bearings on the pedal bodies. Judging by the wear on my pedal bodies, the bearings will outlast the body. If you have any tips to make the grease replacement service less tedious, I’m all ears.
We’ll see what Favero say, I have a feeling they will side with you.
In the meantime, I’m interested to find out if anyone else has had a similar experience with their RS or MX pedals.
No experience with RS or MX as I have an old style set that are ~7 years old. Their spindles and the many spindles I’ve seen on other pedals don’t exhibit that type of wear or pitting. It seems like it got contaminated, or was totally devoid of any grease or lube having either been assembled dry or having it washed out.
