Fastest way to AI FTP?

I would like to use AI FTP, however I do all of my workouts using TrainingPeaks Virtual and match them afterwards. AI FTP requires 10 workouts using the TR workout player. After that all is good and it will continue to update afterwards.

My question is, what is the fastest way to get AI FTP auto-calculating? Can I queue up a bunch of small workouts? Can I load workouts up but skip the intervals?

I use TPVirtual but use the trainer road app on my iPhone to control erg on trainer whilst connecting power to TPVirtual on laptop

Thanks, I don’t want to do that for a multitude of reasons.

Do you want to feed AIFTP with 10 rides that give it a decent chunk of data that is representative of your power across a range of durations?

Or just get it started asap?

There are pros and cons of each

Maybe something like 10x Intro Workout - Smart would do it? You could knock those out in less than 45 minutues all in

This. I don’t care if it’s not accurate initially as I know my current FTP.

Well, if you have 45 minutes available, 10x “Intro Workout - Smart” should be doable in that time.

Before I do this, is someone able to confirm that these will count for ‘1st 10’ AI FTP detection?

I can’t see why it wouldn’t work. It is a TR indoor workout and this page https://support.trainerroad.com/hc/en-us/articles/4415864080155-How-to-Use-AI-FTP-Detection says that you need a minimum of 10 completed TR indoor workouts

Two ways to confirm I suppose

  1. Wait for a TR staffer to come here and say yes / no

  2. Ride it once and see if shows up as counting towards the 10 when you click the button to use the feature.

Even though TR staffers are quick to respond, the workout is only 4 minutes…

I’ll give one a go later today and report back.

I was in the same about a month ago when I signed up for TR after taking about 6 years off from it. Those short workouts don’t seem to count or factor into anything. So, yeah, don’t waste your time with those short workouts. I tried doing 5 five minute ones and TR acted like they were non existent.

I started taking my 90 minute workouts and splitting them into 30 minute workouts. That seemed to work, though TR didn’t count the last 30 minute workout but did take my last 60-minute SS session.

I tried intro workout 1, but it didn’t count against the 10. I guess maybe there is a minimum workout length.

That being the case, I am disappointed that the official support page for AIFTP is misleading

The page states

“In order for AI FTP Detection to have enough data to accurately detect your FTP, you need a minimum of 10 completed TrainerRoad indoor workouts . If you haven’t completed enough workouts, don’t stress—you’ll see how many more you need when you click the button to use the feature. Once you’ve completed these 10 workouts, AI FTP Detection will analyze and incorporate all indoor and outdoor rides with power data, whether or not they’re TrainerRoad workouts.”

As you can see, there is no mention of any minimum workout duration, or any other condition.

It would be good if a TR staffer clarified if possible and also for the official support page to be amended to properly set out the requirements.

Oh, is that right? Mine said I have 9/10. I did one in Zwift earlier, and it still says 9/10.

Maybe I need to do one on my phone just to get over that hump. That would be a bit annoying.

It sounds like completing any TrainerRoad workout that isn’t an FTP assessment or “freeride” of sorts should count towards the 10 workout requirements.

@gloscherrybomb maybe those few sub-5 minute workouts are classified differently which is why they aren’t counting. You might have to step it up to the 15-minuters. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Huh?

He wants to have access to AI FTP going forward and will seed it with a manually-entered FTP.

Question for behind the hood on the 10 rides bit. If you just feed the 10 rides with “bogusish” rides like the intro one 10 times, how would that ever generate a reliable ftp? If its using additional rides as well for the calculation then why the heck do you need 10 TR rides?

If I were you, Id just create 10 custom workouts then match them to past rides.
Im not subbed so I cant test it but I think a shortcut to this could be to create the workout in trainingpeaks scheduled for tomorrow. Sync TR/TP then I think you can find that workout in the library for you to match against a past ride.

Matching doesn’t work. All my workouts are TrainerRoad workouts, to the letter, matched to the prescribed workout once uploaded. These don’t count.

I’ll try a 15 minute one in the player, by the wink above it sounds like that may well be the threshold.

Seems all sorts of unnecessary to be honest.

Let us know if the 15 minute workout does count (or not) please.

I didn’t think @eddiegrinwald actually answered the question, nor clarify the official support page for AIFTP.

I don’t know official reasoning but I am quite sure AI FTP needs N (=10) good/real workouts to classify athlete into some internal profile bucket so it can start estimating how athlete progresses with any kind of future work that probably doesn’t need to be TR workout after that.
