Dylan Johnson's "The Problem with TrainerRoad Training Plans": it's gonna be a busy day around here

so awesome…

I only know two guys personally who have tried the HV plans and both blew up before ever completing one full phase

I’ll have to agree with this. On one hand, it invites open discussion, which is good, but on another hand it kind of contributes to muddying the waters for a lot of newer people seeking advice around here. It’s kind of like being invited to someone’s house for dinner and telling them how much their cooking sucks lol

Did TR mentionned that the Thursday workout was optional? Or thats a suggestion?

Don’t really like his presentation but my style probably wouldn’t get as many clicks.

Ignoring some of his criticism that lack context, I think he has two valid points;

  • TR don’t offer a polarised plan
  • TR plans aren’t the best conceivable way to train

Given that most podcast listeners know this and that the plans are for time-compromised amateur athletes I don’t think these are ground breaking points.

I’m sure that’s fine if you did it in private and went about it the right way #RadicalCandor

ps reference to last week’s podcast.

Actually, could you tell us what his experience is? All his website says is he has “10 years of coaching and racing experience”. So i know he was at the Brevard CTS shop, not sure how long, but beyond that, what experience does he have?

I’ve been watching his videos for about a year now, he’s young and a coach. He started with CTS but gained popularity from his videos so split with CTS and now is an independent coach.

I find him endearing and think his backwards hat Dylan gag pretty funny because he’s such a dork, it works.

He’s a very successful long distance MTB racer so he has some chops there.

He’s young so he understands how to get clicks. Obviously, lol.

His “research” is what proves his points. Meaning he believes X, so looks for research that proves X. Like everyone else does.

I think the cries of “he’s trying to get clients” is the sign of a mediocre mind. I mean no shit. They ALL are. You think TR goes; “well we have enough users let’s just focus on appeasing the whiners we have now” Nope. It’s all business. TR, Dylan, Kolie they all need to earn a living. Dylan posts mildly amusing videos, clicks mean potential clients. Kolie posts mountainous research and has a podcast that requires actual note taking, which means potential clients. TR same thing, yes it’s all to “make you faster” but what happened to the old view that it’s all about money (I don’t fault anyone ever for legitimately trying to earn money) and having some skepticism about “values” and “vision” from businesses? Trend following statements, social commentary, podcasts, videos it’s all to get more…be that clicks or clients but don’t EVER forget what it’s about. It’s to grow their user base, period and they’ll say what they can towards that end. Dylan wants more clients, so does Kolie and Tim wants people to buy WKO. They offer something to us in return for being potential clients.

Anyway, these threads usually turn out good because unlike me, most users on here are smart and post smart and useful stuff.

This is nothing more than a “shot across the bow” from Dylan. For clicks, attention and yes clients. Good on him for getting after it. It leads to good discussion and learning for many and for that we can all be grateful.

Checking intervals.icu for the intensity distribution for the last twenty weeks (SSB1 +2 and part of sustained power build, all low volume but with outside rides as well) I have:

Polarised: 1 week
Pyramid: 4 weeks
Threshold: 3 weeks
Base: 12 weeks

What does that say? Dunno.

Training plans are a bit like shopping - doesn’t really matter if you use a Ferrari or a Ford, you’ll get the job done.

47 hours in 3 months - an average of only about 4 hours per week - is considered “mid-volume”?

TR could whip out a polarized training plan in a day.

There’s gotta be method behind the madness.

Personal suggestion.

I don’t dislike it. You would swap the Thursday workout for an Endurance ride if you’re feeling a bit flat?

It’s more like 5-6 hours. Usually 3x1 hour under the week and 2x1.5 in SSB1 and 1x1.5 + 1x2 in SSB2, in the weekends.
the average is a bit dragged down, becasue I skipped the Wednesday workout 3 tiems I think (the other times I replaced it with some random 1 h sweetspot workout). Also it didn’t do many workouts in the recovery week.

So what would the total have been if your compliance had been perfect?

Even accounting for the intended market, I would consider “mid-volume” to be at least 8 hours per week.

Uh uhm quick backofthenappkin-math I would say subtract 4 hours of sweetspot and add about 8 hours of Z2 to what I posted

Fair points but did you hear the sneering condescension from Nate and the crew when Nate was getting KS to say he doesn’t do POL training?

It was funny…but I’m not the only person who noticed an underlying contempt in this words as well. TR couched it as “smack talk”…but there was some extra zing in there. Also go back to when Nate and Kolie were argu…discussing training methods in earlier KM posts. Maybe not trolling but not “open” to new or different ideas for sure.

Granted it’s not a picture of an oiled up Pete Morris posed as a Norse god stabbing to death the Sufferfest 4DP logo.

But make no mistake, it was a troll of popular alternate training methods for sure.

You do understand that the majority of scientific studies are based on a 3 zone model right? They use the two lactate and ventilatory turn points as markers. The 5 zone model is not based on a measurable or accurate physiological marker, ie tempo vs SST

Frankly he portrays himself that way - I have no idea who he is, and why should I care?

Who says something is not important - what they say might be.

The YouTube clip follows the same formula many youtubers use; 90% designed controversy, 10% rational points. This is so that arguments start in the audience, generating more views. But maybe I’m just cynical. TR doesn’t use that formula which is partly why it’s something I subscribe to.
