Hey, I am flying with my bike to nova scotia this summer, but to make by bike fit in a regulation box, I need to remove the dropper post (which is internaly routed). can this be done, and how would I keep the cable from falling back in?
Here’s what I do. There’s no slack in the cable/housing in the frame so to raise the dropper, I create slack by removing the remote from the bars so that I can feed the cable/housing in at the front of the bike (with the remote still attached to the cable) as I pull the dropper up and out. Once it’s out far enough to access the bottom, it’s a simple matter of pulling the housing out of its receptacle on the post and pivoting it out and unhooking the cable from its cradle. At that point, the post is free. The cable/housing is stiff enough it won’t fall back in as long as the remote end of it isn’t pulled back out. The remote can be wrapped in some padding and zip tied or otherwise fastened to keep it from banging around.
If youve created the slack by removing the remote why even bother disconnecting it at that point? Just wrap the post and secure it to the frame for the shipping. One less thing to deal with when reassembling.
Would it be possible to pack your bag if the dropper was pushed in? I had the same problem a few years ago I emailed the dropper company (PNW) and they said it was fine to leave it compressed for a day or two while the bike was packed. I didn’t know if leaving it compressed for a while would be bad for it, at least in this case, apparently not
Totally. If there is enough slack to be able to be able to position and fasten the seatpost for transport without damaging the cable, sure. In my experience, it’s been easier to detach the post and put it saddle down below and along side the rear wheel.
