Difference between Masters Balanced and Demanding Approach

I’m on base week 7 of a masters plan with balanced approach. So that’s 2 hard days, 4 rides total. I note that if I move the slider to demanding, I’ll get an extra hour in base increasing weekly time to 5 hours vs 4, consisting of an easy 30min on a day that is currently off, plus extra duration on Sunday’s endurance ride.

How would I know if I would be better served by those options? Is TR going to take TSS from the hard days and move it to the endurance days?

I saw a comment from @Nate_Pearson on another thread that seemed to say something along the lines of: a Demanding (or Aggressive) approach should get you to your desired level more quickly, but also may not be sustainable over a longer period of time. So, you might give some thought to what, and when, your goals are.

The Balanced approach for most athletes is the best approach to progress fitness while receiving enough recovery to remain consistent and prevent long-term fatigue.

The Demanding approach is for athletes who are prepared for a demanding plan and who understand their recovery needs to make progress.

I would recommend starting with a Balances approach and see how it suits you before trying a Demanding approach. Alternatively you can set the Balanced approach and after each phase check the Check Volume feature to add more more volume.

Balanced keeps intensity the same and limits total volume. Demanding adds more easy endurance time, not more intensity. TrainerRoad does not move TSS from hard days to easy days, it just increases weekly load by extending low stress rides. If you are recovering well, hitting targets, and not feeling stale, demanding can work. If fatigue creeps in or hard days suffer, balanced is the better choice.
