COVID Vaccine Shots and Training

I’m scheduled for shot #1 on Monday. I’ve heard from family and friends about the issues discussed here so going in with that knowledge helps me plan.

Looking forward to my FTP increase.:stuck_out_tongue:

Update to my previous post.

I got my 2nd dose of Moderna on the morning of Feb 25th and I was fine throughout the day, maybe a mild headache.

That was until about 9pm when the fever and chills hit. Chills so bad I could barely hold a glass of water without it spilling. I could not get warm, in sweats, under a comfoter and two blankets, with a space heater pointed at me. I was still freezing.

Worke up a bunch throughout the night. Went to bed at about 9:30pm, woke up at midnight thinking it had been 6-7 hours already… took me a while to get back to sleep again around 12:45/1am. Woke up again around 4am with the same thing, except this time I was covered in sweat. Headed to the bathroom and took some ibuprofen, laid in bed again until I passed out until about 7:30am.

Finally felt a little better after that, hopped in the shower for about 20-30 mins and afterwards was back pretty much to baseline, if not just exhausted and sore from the excessive chills. Was able to complete my workouts on Sat. and Sun. as planned and have been fine with training ever sense.

I just got my second dose last week. For each shot I felt like crap the day after and basically went to bed after work. Thus I got plenty of rest and woke up the next day and felt fine. I then completed the workout i initially had scheduled the previous day with no issues.
To sum it up, I just scheduled a rest day the day after getting the shot. Got plenty of rest and then was good to go.

Had both doses of Pfizer now, nothing to report apart from a sore arm after dose 1, which went within 24 h, and a sore arm after dose 2 that was a little worse, and a very slight muzzy feeling the next 24h (on a scale of 0 - 10, where 0 is normal health and 10 is the last minute of the final interval on Mary Austin, this was a 0.5).

I have had my first AstraZeneca vaccine. I had some hot flushes the day after, but didn’t last long. All in all no major symptoms.

I have had the same workout fatigue experience, with my first COVID shot (Moderna). Slight site discomfort and a slightly weird first night sleep, but otherwise I felt completely normal. Except a big need for sleep. A weekend catnap lasted 3 hours. Day 2 I tried a VO2 workout. I finished it (barely) but it was much harder than expected (stupid in retrospect). Today Day 4 I tried another harder workout - my plan is serving up VO2s - and I bailed after the warmup. There was no way I was going to do 3 minute VO2 intervals today. I am going to relax completely for 2-3 days at this point.

Got the first Moderna and felt fine afterward. Got the second on a Friday afternoon, felt feverish that night and the next morning raced a short 4 mile TT. Felt fine once I was warmed up, but felt bad the rest of the day after the race.
I would recommend treating the second dose like a race, rest up for a couple of days before hand, take your vitamins and hydrate. Couldn’t recommend racing the next day though, despite winning. Felt better and better through Sunday and was good to go on Monday.

Just got the 2nd Moderna a few days ago. Both 1 and 2 went fine. On 2 I anticipated some slight issues, but have to say my arm never even felt anything. I had a meeting at work the day of the shot and thought I might have to excuse myself, but absolutely no side effects at all, and di tough workouts the same day and days after. Schedule as usually. I say plan for potential issues on the 2nd, but don’t talk yourself into anything, as workouts and fitness are said to even boost the vaccine effect.

I got the Johnson and Johnson vaccine yesterday, so one and done. I have some local soreness at the injection sight but otherwise feeling normal. Sleep metrics and RHR and were both normal. I’m proceeding with my plan which includes Bashful +6 today. I asked the nurse about post exercise guidelines and she said there is no inherent reason to skip/reduce, just use common sense and listen to your body.

Being 53 and having only minor underlying conditions (hypothyroidism and borderline high BP) I am no where close to getting a vaccine here in NV where they just started doing 65+. I had covid so I should be ok for a few more months as I recently tested positive for the antibodies. Im hoping to get the J&J vaccine…I keep reading that people who have had it only need one dose of the to mrna vaccines to boost their antibodies.

I got the first Moderna shot last Friday afternoon. Did a nice 3 hour group ride Saturday morning where I felt perfectly normal. Did a 24 mile mountain bike ride Sunday and felt normal. Had a few drinks Sunday night and felt pretty puny Monday morning, but probably the drinks, not the vaccine.

Another person (older) on the Saturday right had their first the prior day and he turned around after just a few minutes, but he has a history of vaccine reaction.

Another person (older) on the same ride said her legs wouldn’t put out power for several days after getting the first shot.

*Update - Developed a slight headache over the course of the morning but decided to throw my leg over and give it a try. I could immediately tell something was off during warm up based on body sensations and heart rate data backed that up (reading 10bpm higher @65% FTP vs my baseline). I’ve been doing structured training for several years so I have a good qualitative and quantitative understanding of how my body responds to stress. Learning from my past transgressions, I’m scheduling a rest day or two to let the body do its thing. Hope someone can learn from my anecdotal experience…as others have recommended, it’s probably best to schedule some rest time into your plan if you know your vaccine schedule.

Got my first dose of pfizer this morning. 5 hours later and nothing to report other than a slightly sore delt. Luckily it fell within a rest week. I most likely won’t ride tomorrow but possibly the day after.

I’ll follow up if I feel any sides.

Having read all the posts, It seems everybody’s reaction is unique to them.
There are theories, but no evidence .
I had the Astra Zeneca. I went home and did my weights session, then did the horses and felt fine. But later that evening I started feeling achy and got a slight headache. Then I didn’t sleep at all, and felt a bit too hot in bed. I’ve never felt like this before, so I decided it wasn’t going to defeat me ,got on the trainer and did the ssb1 workout as planned. HR was a bit high, and legs felt tired. Next day I went for a run, which was slightly better, but I had a wuzzy feeling like after an anasthetic. Then I found I had abdominal discomfort, and had to stop any dairy, and gluten. This unpleasantness lasted for 2 weeks, with below par training, loss of motivation and depression. I’m really not looking forward to the 2nd dose, and I have asked the Dr about not having it.
I had very mild Covid symptoms in Feb 2020, just thought it was a head cold . But I completely lost my sense of smell and taste for 3 months(unlike ever before) and later it was included as a covid symptom.
I’m old, and female. Astra zeneca shot 1

I’m in air National Guard and got my second Moderna shot last Monday. The next 3 days I was wiped out. Because of guard I only just got back on the bike today. I did Mills today and it wiped me out. Anyone noticing a dip in fitness? I was a off the bike for 8 days but I can’t believe it would affect me that much. I know that I would lose some fitness but wow it felt like I went backwards.

I got my first Pfizer dose last Thursday. Other than soreness at the injection site for a day I had no other side effects. Was planning on riding Friday and felt fine but it turned out to be very windy that day so took the day off. Road over the weekend and didn’t notice any difference from my normal rides.

Brian - I had a similar ‘workout fatigue’ reaction to dose 1 of Moderna. I’m now taking it as a recovery week just to listen to my body and not push it unnecessarily. No big events for me, I was just having fun getting stronger, so happy to adapt my schedule to get some immunity.

Got my first Pfizer shot Monday midday. Arm sore, but not surprising since I usually had that when I would get my annual flu shot as well. Did my usual Tylenol and tried to keep the arm moving around to help. Didn’t have any issues sleeping.

Felt okay this morning, so did my scheduled TR workout of Garfield (4x5 @100% FTP) with some added endurance minutes. All went well and don’t feel anything out of the ordinary.

Have Mount Field (3x12 @85% FTP) set for tomorrow. Should be good to go. :+1:

Crossing my fingers that the second dose in 3 weeks goes just as well. TBD.

Just FYI - I’ve read a few things that suggest there will be a 2nd shot recommended for those who got J&J. Not discouraging people from taking it, just fair warning for those who are seeking it out because it’s a “1 shot” solution, which I’m seeing a lot of where I live.

Had AZ yesterday and had mild flu symptoms… headache, fatigued limbs etc

No chance I was going to do even an endurance ride today, hopefully ok tomorrow! Arms hurts too :grinning:
