Covid vaccine and flu vaccine

hey I got the flu and covid shots yesterday. is it normal to have to take the next day off from feeling sore?

Responses to the vaccines are very individual…some people have little to no side effects, others end up with cold / flu symptoms.

So ā€œnormalā€ is a pretty vague term here…but it is certainly not unusual to need a day of recovery following the shots.

Hey @PastaEPista,

Yes, I’d say that’s totally normal.

As @Power13 mentioned, we all respond a bit differently, but regardless, there is a lot happening internally after a vaccination, so resting the day after is never a bad idea. :sleeping_bed:

Never any issues for me with COVID or flu shots. Shingles shots, on the other hand, hit me hard for a day, or three.

Oh jeez, 100%…the shingles vax knocked me on my ass for 2 days. Just brutal…but I will gladly take those 2 days vs. actually getting the shingles!!

I had the misfortune of going through the two different types of shingles vaccines, and yeah they kicked pretty hard.

One of the flu shots took me down for nearly a week, but the rest have been really easy. Mostly it’s a fever for about 8 hours, some very minor body aches, and then BOOM back to normal. The Covid vaccines have been different, with some causing some mental confusion, and one causing a shingles like reaction. I think I’ve had 4, not sure, but one seemed harder than the rest, but after losing so many friends/family, figured it’s worth it.

But after getting the flu on a trip to Orlando (got sick that first night there! Worst time there ever), I get the shot. Some years it’s not perfect coverage, but it beats the ā€˜ten rounds with the champ’ feeling lasting a week or more.

And don’t forget the RSV vaccine! RSV is running rampant in some states and it’s really nasty, like people cracking ribs coughing.

damn!! i’ve got mine next week. Apparently it’s 2 shots total, each 1 a month apart.

2-6 months apart…when I got my first one, it was only a day or to before the world shutdown for COVID. Kept putting off my second one and just happened to walk into Walgreens on the last day of my 6 month window to get my 2nd dose. It woulda sucked to have to end up getting 3 doses of that damn vax!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Just plan on being down for a day or two and you should be OK. Again, still WAY better than actually getting shingles!!!

Yeah, the shingles vaccine absolutely wrecked me for a few days. Not looking forward to the second shot, but it’ll still be way better than getting shingles.

A friend of mine got covid, and the covid triggered shingles over large parts of his face, including one of his eyes, and he was at risk of having his vision permanently impaired. Turned out OK, but seriously scary stuff.

yeah, I had a very, very mild case of shingles about 20 years ago that developed just to the side of my left eye and I needed to go see an ophthalmologist to make sure the virus was not in the ocular nerves. Thankfully it wasn’t, and like I said, it was a very mild case. Just a small, barely noticeable rash next to my eye.

I’ll see your shingles shot and raise you Yellow Fever. When I was in the Air Force they only gave it on Fridays because it was going to knock you on your ass.

I was the same. My shingles was fairly mild, but it was on my left temple and they were concerned it was going to be in my eye, so I had to go to the ophthalmologist to have it checked out. Fortunately I was also the same - it was all ok.

I’ll definitely be getting the vaccine as soon as I can, even though I know it’s going to kick my butt. My husband still uses it as comparison to all of the other vaccines - ā€œNot nearly as bad as the shingles shots!ā€

Covid vaccination kicks my butt starting at ~18 hrs after the shot to ~36 hrs. During that time I’m weak, feverish, and achy, kinda like I feel having the flu. It ends pretty abruptly and I quickly feel fine again. I had the same with the shingles vaccine. I’ve never felt anything after a flu shot.

Do you mean next day off from training?

Yup, me too!

A day off training? For me, if I get the shot in the AM, the next day is def NG for training. The day after that is totally fine.

Only side effects I remember from COVID and flu shots were soreness at the injection site, which I get for every injection. I don’t remember having to take any time off from training, maybe no bouldering for a day or two.

Only vaccine I remember reacting to was anthrax, but even that wasn’t terrible.

When I did my Covid and flu vaccine together, it knocked me on my butt hard. When I did them a week apart, no issue. Obviously there are tons of other factors, but that personal example was enough for me to do them separately.

I scheduled my flu and covid vaccines for a recovery week as I have had issues with them in the past, but this time other then a sore shoulder I didnt have any ill effects. I have never had the shingles shot but the worst vaccine i have had was the 3rd rabies dose (nowadays they only do 2) that one had me out of work for a couple days.
