Bought this clunker back in 2008 with the matching burr grinder. Been using it in anger every day since.

Thats a beautiful coffee maker. Ive yet to buy one next month. My current coffee set is broken. It just doesnt heat up the water anymore. Ive had it for a good 3 years so I think I need a replacement.

I’m a recent coffee before workout convert (I’m still working on the liking it bit :grinning:). At the moment I have a Dolce Gusto capsule machine which I’m using with Ristretto Barista caps but I’m thinking about getting a moka pot to see if it is better to drink.

Can any coffee expert tell me please if I can get a single expresso out of a moka pot designed for more cups? I have an induction hob and it looks like the smallest compatible Bialetti type pot I can get is a 2 cup one, does it affect anything if you literally use 1/2 the amount for everything or is it better to fill it as though I’m going to have 2 cups but then only use 1 and tip the rest? I have a 100ml expresso cup so there are limits to how much I could have at the same time, the capsules I use produce 35ml at the moment so I can toss it down and not worry about the taste too much - heretical I know!

Technically and I could be wrong but mokapot cannot make espresso but you can make espresso like drinks with it.

James Hoffman did a “How to make a fake espresso” type video using an aeropress and a mokapot a couple of weeks ago. I think it was to help those missing their daily coffee shop fix.

Anyway his mokapot method advocates stopping the process as soon as you hear any steam coming out by cooling it down and thus reduce the output somewhat. How much I don’t know but you can play with these things.

Just as importantly what coffee and grind are you going to use? It’s a massive impact on taste.

I just use an aeropress and I’m perfectly happy with that for making an espresso like drink.

For those that saw my post above you can tell i’m pretty serious about my coffee.
I do use an aeropress and mokapot when travelling depending on locale and amenities available.

Aeropress: there are 101+ “recipes” online for how to do it, just go check one out they all work. Grind size is important for them though so what i would suggest is sorting out with your grinder (or hand grinder) what setting works best to get you the ideal grind, and ensure you are consistent with that

Mokapot: dead easy and love them. I wasn’t aware of Hoffman’s method but i am similiar pulling it off the heat right as i see the final bit coming through. Get a nice rich “pull” if you do it that way and its pretty close to espresso in terms of taste.

Anyone have the robot? Thinking about it eventually.

I “splurged” on a standard Keurig, office version. It’s all about efficiency for me. The timer turns it on an hour before we wake up, so it’s always ready to go when we need it. The water source is connected directly to the RO tank.

Does anyone have really good history with a Super Automatic? A Saeco or equivalent? I’d like to get a second setup for the office, but it will need to be something pretty simple…

I’ve had 2 Saecos - a really good one (Italia, which was another model rebranded for Starbucks), and an Odea. Love the former, hate the latter. In general, these work if you take the time to adjust the grinder, adjust the coffee load quantity, and adjust the shot time. They will never reach the quality you can get with many of the machines you see in this thread, simply because the brew head is plastic and control over coffee and water quantities is limited.

But - since most of the coffees I make are lattes in the morning, I am a lot more forgiving.

That’s all I use currently. Works perfectly for morning cups, works great for cold brew - that’s all I need. I love coffee, but not much of a coffee snob. As for beans - Death Wish is my fav now.
