That’s my sentiment precisely, but …
… I’m not telling you what you should do, just what I do: I accept to pay more for all the other things I get when I choose my local bike shop over online retailers. The growing importance of online retailers has a negative impact on the viability of local bike shops.
Bike shops in Japan can be very particular. An ex-pro I know who lives in Fukuoka was ostracized at a group ride organized by the Trek shop, because he didn’t own a Trek bike. Or here in Sendai a bike store employee made fun of a customer, because he was wearing a Rapha outfit — and they weren’t selling Rapha. (If you were smart, you’d see that this customer has disposable income for high-end bike clothes …)
But with Canyon and other online brands I get (but don’t agree with) the sentiment that often customers buy their bikes online, don’t know how to put it together or bought them in the wrong size, and expect the service to be done for cheap by the local bike shop.
