Budget ISH aero base layer

With all the evidence for ribbed bases layers I’m really tempted except for the pretty astronomical price for ones like No Pinz or Rule 28.

Tbh now the thinking has been done it’s a relatively simple garment to make so has anyone found an affordable brands (Dhb pre closure, Galibier and so on) making one?

Castelli just released the Bolero Aero Base Layer

Perhaps middle ground cost wise…not as expensive as Rule 28 and NoPinz, but still not “budget” - but an alternative nonetheless.

Found a China-tastic copy while searching for a jersey.

For 12 quid I’ve decided to give it a punt.

If you (or anyone thinking of buying the Darevie brand) I’d suggest buying 2 sizes smaller than your normal size.

I’ve got a couple from AliExpress arriving this week…ordered two sizes (M & L) since it was listed as “Asian Sizing” or something similar.

I recently purchased and wore in my last 2 gravel races. It’s fine, a bit tight in the armpit area so I made a small cut to relieve pressure and stretch a bit. Never noticed it during actual races though. I’m sure now at minimum I’ve saved 50 watts!

Just as an FYI Darevie have some problems with getting this out. I ordered a load, and twice I’ve ordered a small and nothing has arrived at all.

In terms of sizing, I would take a size down from Castelli or Rapha Pro Team (e.g. Medium Pro Team Jersey , Small Darevie).

Well I’ve gone for a small so just have to see what turns up.

Fingers crossed.

Spatz just released an aero base layer: SPATZWEAR - 'CoolR' Summer/Indoor Baselayer | White – SpatzWear

That actually looks fairly good and at a vaguely sensible price - unlike literally every single other product Spatz make (which is generally fine but absurdly priced).

I might get one for colder weather racing in the UK.

Yup…mine arrived today. The Med (Asian) was marked as S for US / Euro and even then it is a big too big for me (normally a Small in Castelli and Pactimo for reference). When I ordered it, Small (Asian) was not an option.

Was considering bringing it to a tailor and having it taken in, but probably just cheaper to get a smaller one sent. :man_shrugging:

My wife is an accomplished seamstress. She actually sewed sails for a sail loft in Hood River back in the early 90’s. We tried making it tighter across the back and especially the sleeves. It’s better but, it still just fits poorly. There just seems to be too much material everywhere and it bunches up to much under the jersey for my liking. Not sure if a tailor can fix this thing…

Honestly just buy a few more in a smaller size.

I found them very easy to sell on ebay / other marketplaces - people don’t like ordering from ax. I wonder why.

Oh no, I don’t.

My advice; make an order from them just for the baselayers - not alongside another load of random shite from ali. It’s easy to go “oh I’ll just have x or y”, but the problem is all of your stuff goes in one bag and that’s all that gets tracked.

The first time I ordered a medium and a small and they sent a medium and some random garbage socks. Tracking shows “arrived” but that’s just because “a parcel arrived” (containing other stuff). 3 weeks later got a refund - took a fight with ali because obviously how do you show a parcel that doesn’t contain something.

Ordered a small again with some other stuff, nothing came but tracking said arrived. Darevie insisted “sent and tracked”. 3 weeks later, refunded.

If you just order the baselayers (2 should get you free shipping) they have to either send them or not.

Pretty sure they just ran out of smalls (after I ordered they listed as OOS) and pretended it was shipped and hoped I wouldn’t claim.

My small arrived and fit isn’t bad at 67kg.

Being a crop top design it does look bloody hilarious mind you. Worth 12 quid just for the giggles!
