Automatic training plan comes with Not Recommended training

I’m preparing for a multi-day bike ride using an automatically adapting training plan, and I’m doing my workouts in Zwift. Tonight’s Zwift training was extremely tough. After finishing, I checked the TrainerRoad calendar and saw that I had completed an anaerobic workout rated at 8.9, while my previous score was only 1.2. This training was selected for me by the plan, but in retrospect, it was marked as ‘Not Recommended.’

Afterward, I received an update to my training plan: my scheduled 1.5 anaerobic workout for next week has been upgraded to a 7.4, which seems consistent with the todays training. However, I don’t understand why the plan selected a workout for me that was much harder than expected, especially since none of my other scores exceed 5, and TrainerRoad labeled it as ‘Not Recommended.’ Could this be a glitch in the system?

Hey there,

This is expected behavior – while workouts may appear easier or harder at first glance, they’re part of significant under-the-hood improvements to TrainerRoad designed to make you faster.

We are reworking the “Not Recommended” labeling as well since that has been causing confusion lately.

I checked out your account and it looks like you were able to complete the workout – nice job! :flexed_biceps:

I could be wrong, but I remember comments (message board or podcast or both… not sure) that TR is working on selecting the “perfect workout” for you and will eventually do away with the “recommended” labels. It sounds like it worked?!?

Thanks for clarifying.

I was indeed able to complete, although it was far out of my comfort zone. On the other hand, that’s something I expect from a training plan

Do I understand your comment correctly, that the algorithm is improved and I might soon get more of these challenging trainings?

Yes, some improvements to workout selections (as you have seen here) have already been released, while others are still being worked on. Part of these improvements is indeed that you’ll get dialed into more appropriately challenging workouts more quickly than before! :tada:
