I don’t understand why my workout for today is marked as “Not Recommended” given today isn’t a Red / Yellow day, and the workout level is very much below my Athlete Level. Bug?
This looks like a custom workout, and it’s hard to compare that to one of our own TR workouts.
Levels calculated for custom workouts aren’t always 100% accurate, which could be part of the problem, but if you’re using custom workouts, it probably doesn’t matter as much if a workout isn’t recommended since you’re doing things on your own anyway. ![]()
I’ll ask the team, though, just to be sure.
Eddie - then TR should stop assigning workout levels when they know they are inaccurate. Or stop whatever the algorithm is that is tagging this as “not recommended”.
I’ve been a long time user of TR, but it feels like these latest “updates” are making TR not usable for those of us who don’t follow TR plans / use TR created workouts. If this is the direction that TR is going, that is a business decision that TR is in its rights to make. But be forthright about this direction or take into account the issue of non-TR workouts / non-TR plans
If you’re not using TR workouts, or following a TR plan, I am a bit confused as to why you are using TR at all. Not that you don’t have a reason, just that I don’t understand it.
Prior to TrainingPeaks Virtual, I was using TR as my workout player of choice with custom workouts + I found AI FTP detection to be spot on for me.
I’m probably a dinosaur corner case, but I’ve been a user since TR’s beta days when Nate was also customer support and the legacy pricing made it worthwhile for me to keep my TR subscription. But the combination of TrainingPeaks Virtual + TR’s changes is really making me rethink keeping my TR subscription even at the legacy pricing.
I’m looking into this now, but in the meantime, I’d still ignore the “Not Recommended” tag. If you’re creating custom workouts, then TR’s guidance is somewhat secondary. This has been the case for quite a while.
I will report back what I find!
Out of interest what does the predicted RPE chart look like for that custom workout of yours?
Bear in mind that the “not recommended” indication isn’t the same as before.
The old version was a very basic comparison between the workout level and your current level.
Now all it’s showing is that the AI thinks you have a greater than 3% chance of failing it - which you might be ok with ![]()
Ah so you don’t get the predicted RPE chart like below
Could very well be a bug then.
Maybe when it can’t work out the predicted RPE it defaults to “not recommended” - which is wrong in my opinion.
One reason is to use TR if not following the plans, is to run other workouts on the TR workout player, which is by far the most reliable and accurate workout player. Also, the second reason is to use an extensive library in case of a self-coached athlete, bcs sometimes you just want to peek appropriate workout instead of creating one in TrainingPeaks.
In my opinion this new version makes it easier to use TrainerRoad if you aren’t using a TrainerRoad Plan, not harder. It’s so easy just to select any type of, or specific workout, and drop it anywhere in the calendar and then you have the option to let AI choose the workout, adjust the workout, or you can even pin the workout if you don’t want AI to touch it. I can’t imagine it being more flexible and I for one am super impressed with what they’ve accomplished with this latest update.
