Anyone using RGT Cycling, thoughts?

thats what I figure too

With regards to which has the better graphics then I suppose it’s down to how you define “better”.

Technically speaking RGT is superior, based an the unity engine it is capable of more realistic visuals. Zwift is based on a really cumbersome custom engine that requires ridiculous computing power to tick over - but they really spend time on the style and artistry to make the world’s interesting.

I feel that zwift have made a conscious design decision to go for interesting instead of realistic visuals and as I mentioned above I do find RGT a bit boring compared to Zwifts stylised world’s.

I also find RGT courses a bit repetitive but they have done an amazing job considering how small a team they have compared to Zwift.

  • That is key, and something that even Z reps (create John Mayfield for one) have mentioned specifically in podcast questions.

  • Preference is one thing, but RGT is the more “advanced” 3D modeler & rendering app by choice and definition of each company.

Magic roads with bots is where rgt works well. Races and group rides and fun as the drafting dynamics are spot on. I do agree though it does look minecrafty like you said. I use Atv 4k on medium and get 40 fps usually.

You are premium and have a gpx file that you send to magicroads@rgtcycling.com. It knows your account.

You then can create an event or just ride the course and it will auto generate different terrain but not like the route. Put your setting to 100% and it does feel like real life. The event has the option to have bots at different watts depending on what you want. With different terrain you just need to visualize where you are on the route by the mile markers as an example. With routes you are not familiar with personally not a big deal.

As an example I road a course last week in my hometown on RGT and it was spot on. Time was 9 minutes different than when I was there last summer but I think it would have been closer as I was going slower for my bro last year.

I could care less about social element so this works well. I did a group race today and once again the dynamics are really good. I only just subbed this month.

Pics are of my IRL ride and last weeks climb on RGT from my ride file.

I recently created a magic road for a local TT and the first time I rode it in RGT my time was only 20 seconds different to when I last rode it in real life :ok_hand:

There’s a nice tip I found out about the other day for being able to quickly test a magic road (say you’ve made a change in GPXmagic and want to see if looks correct in RGT) before you actually ride it, so thought I’d share it in case it’s useful to anyone else:

  • Once the magic road is in your library go to the Create Event page, select “Create Race” then select your magic road.

  • Set a few bots to be in the race with min/max power at 999w:

  • Join the race in RGT - when the race starts you can switch to Spectate Mode using [Shift + F6]. Using [Page Up/Down] selects other riders - you can then watch them power around your road :sunglasses:

There’s a limit to how long you can spectate for, but it works great for testing shorter magic roads. For longer roads you’d need to pedal once in a while.

I tried a race yesterday, Flanders, 3 laps, the ‘road feel’ was way better than I expected, 20% felt just like 20%.
I had to use my phone so I was squinting a bit to see the data, but I can see myself using it for a short race to add into my LV Trainerroad plan.

Yes it is quite interesting to me how well it works when it comes to duplicating efforts.

Can you race for free or do you have to subscribe for that?

I used to have an account many moons ago but I stopped it. I’ve downloaded it today and I’ve tried to use it to see if I would prefer it to zwift.

So far I’ve not been able to ride a custom workout. It must be for premium users so I’ll not be going any further with this app.

They have a 14 day free trial of the premium so you can test the full function.

I think so, but have not tried for myself yet.

You can ride the 2 free roads being non premium. 14 day trial is your answer.

Yes you can race for free…

Not if you’ve already been a subscriber in the past. I guess I could use a different email address.

or send them an email asking for another trial since it was long ago

Allowing racing for free is really smart IMO. Having more people in races improves the racing for everyone. Love that they do this.

Elimination race later, 15 second intervals at 150% anyone?

What’s good is that it’s trainerroad that is helping me look forward to this sort of thing.

It is… as long as those enjoying the racing eventually end up subscribing to premium :grinning:
