Any 65+ training with the Masters plan?

67 here and have been training and racing (road/CX) off and on since the 70’s.

Just back on after 10+ years off and mostly doing Crossfit.

Took me a bit to figure out a plan, high volume, my body doesn’t like days off, and modest intensity. Not a slave to the plan because I know enough to modify if I need to but overall I like what it has me doing.

45w increase in a couple months…

67 is great ! may I ask what you approx FTP is?

45 watts up in a couple of months is an awesome jump! Nice work! :muscle:

To be expected after such a long period off the bike.

Currently 235w and not to sound arrogant but I would expect that to significantly increase going forward.

Been doing a lot of base/endurance work as you might imagine after so much time off.

It’s always easier to get it back than it is to get it in the first place I found.

Great job ! Keep it up! Are you on strava? Send me your name I’ll follow you

Thank you but I’m not on Strava.

I’m an old boomer back from the days when we just trained.

Back in the day on my racer mate, the original trainer, I would just go in the basement, turn off the lights and ride for three hours in the dark.

Even today I don’t listen to music, watch TV or fall away podcast when I’m on an indoor trainer.

But here is my file from Cenizo a couple days ago. Really hard to manage that sort of work out on the road and I was frequently way over prescribed FTP and went through 50 of the 60 prescribed efforts.

Great stuff! I agree! Stick with the Training Plan and I’m certain you’ll see that number continue to grow :muscle:.

I’m 72 and using Masters MV for cyclocross, by far my favorite cycling discipline. In a week I ride 5 days, run or do weights on the other two. I only ride 3 x on recovery weeks which are scheduled after 3 week blocks. This seems to work very well for me. I use to rack up 12-18 hour weeks of mostly Z1 or Z2. That provided me with a solid base from which I still draw. I have been an endurance athlete, (with modest results), for over 40 years. I plan on doing this stuff for the long run or as long as I can. I am grateful to have embraced these activities that have given me such good health.

That’s awesome and thanks for your reply.

You got it a few years on me but I know five years now is totally different than five years in your 20s – 30s or even 40s.

I still do a lot of VO2 max, threshold and neuromuscular training as appropriate and I’m gonna keep trying to do that as long as I can.

Keep swinging for the fences and have a great time out there!

I’m 77 and still going strong-ish. I do a Masters plan similar to John Dunn (Hi John - we met at 2023’s PA State Championships in now-infamous Butler PA). I have 5 years on John and 10 years on you, so you have at least a decade to look forward to racing!

I started racing in 2010, started TR in 2018, peaked (so far) in 2021 (check Successful Athletes Podcast #68 for details). If you luck out with your joints and organs, motivation seems to be the limiting factor. Since you’re able to do High Volume, that won’t be a problem!

My FTP was always 250 plus or minus, but in 2021 when I was the youngest in the cyclocross nationals’ age bracket, I got as high as 280. I’ll be happy with 250 until 2026, when I will again be the “youngest”. Shoot for 280 FTP at 80!

That’s all awesome. I’m actually back on my bicycle and off my motocross bike because I do have a couple issues with my right shoulder after five significant injuries over the years.

Nice to know I’m still just a kid around here.

Jim, I really enjoyed listening to your success on that podcast episode!

It’s great to know that there are others in the age group still going hard. At 71 it is heartening to learn of others who are still into some sort of structured training. I am doing modest age group time trials and TR seems to work for me.
