I’m not in AT yet so don’t know. But my feeling is no, just treat it like before and the gains will come.
People were obsessing with FTP being correct or not before, trying different test methods etc. and now they (we) have just switched to obsessing over PL.
I’m on TR for similar reasons as you seem to be. It’s lots better then no structure and I hardly have to think, if I don’t want to dive into details. I will tread AT the same, I am sure.
This is a BETA.
Which is why I made the point above.
I’ve been in the AT beta since some time in February and it’s basically been set and forget for me for nearly all of that time. There were definitely some issues and bugs I reported, but in the past month or so many of those have been eliminated. The only glaring one for me now is outside workouts on Wahoo. And I don’t even think about things at all. Just do my workouts, substitute outdoor rides for some workouts, etc. It’s been an overall good experience for me (link to a longer post I made at the bottom of the post).
So in short, if you’re not having issues like that PL bug after ramp tests (I just did a ramp and didn’t run into this), then it really does take all the thinking out of it. And I’m right there with you. That convenience is the biggest draw to the platform for me.
I agree, but this was the response I got from support - likely a default reply that didn’t look at my account in detail (waiting on a response to my follow-up still)
Thanks for reaching out to TrainerRoad Support about this!
It is intended that your progression levels are lowered after completing an FTP test since completing the same level workout with your new FTP won’t necessarily feel the same as it did with your old FTP value. Check out this article [Click] to learn more about adaptive training and the Updated with Every Ramp Test section for a more detailed explanation of why progression levels are lowered after an FTP test. =)
Let me know if you have any questions about this or anything else.
figured it out. The current day needs to be inside the “Plan start date”. I simply shifted the Base 1 notation to a week in the past and I got the prompt for AT to adjust the plan
Just to play devil’s advocate - you could read what happened to me this week as completely following his post in that thread. My levels went down and are going back up as I complete new workouts.
That combined with the vague, stock response from support, leave a lot of ambiguity. I’ll update once I hear back with an answer from support. It’s been 24 hours since my follow-up email so I just sent them another follow-up, they are usually much more responsive so perhaps it got lost in the shuffle
So I’ve just got this and not sure what it really means apart from the fact that Tempo and Anaerobic workouts are going to be really hard.
Theoretically, in some cases some of your levels might go to 1.0 after an FTP increase, but it always depends on what your level was before the Ramp Test and how significantly your FTP changes. There’s never a situation in which levels should arbitrarily default to 1.0. Additionally, how levels respond to FTP changes is a point of continued refinement.
According to the article How Does Adaptive Training Make you Faster? - TrainerRoad Blog
Progression Levels will now decrease in proportion to the FTP increase. It is in PROPORTION so going down to 1 is clearly a bug, don’t worry that much it will be fixed if not it has been already done.
Updated With Every Ramp Test
After Kate finishes a block of training she takes a Ramp Test to assess her FTP. The test assesses her new FTP to be 8 watts higher than her previous FTP. Because Kate’s FTP increased, her Progression Levels will now decrease in proportion to the FTP increase. This ensures that the workouts in her plan aren’t too challenging with the new bump in FTP but that they still remain tailored to her unique abilities.
Even if Kate feels that the Ramp Test has underestimated or overestimated her abilities in some areas, Adaptive Training’s continuous adjustments will account for any differences between training zones. As she continues to train, Adaptive Training will use the performance from her workouts to adjust so that she gets the right workout for her goals.
While not as severe as yours, I had a 3w increase and my progression levels went from 3-4 to 1 (I am slowly rehabbing from an injury, so my PL was super low). And I was having lots of bugs/errors on my calendar, so this morning they disactivated my AT beta. Perhaps it was part of a broader set of bugs.
They have to still be messing with how the PL adjust. I am doing a short power build atm and my VO2 workous are going as planned and being adjusted upwards in a reasonable fashion. Mind you I sure didnt think Thimble warranted a 5.2PL or I am getting stronger???
At the same point since I am not doing sweetspot they seem to be arbitrarily going down. If I go back to the last sweet spot workout I did it was 4.2 whereas now I am at PL 2.2. I would have no issue doing the 4.2 workout as it was one of my fillers over the winter. My view is this is a beta and still lots for them to be working on.
Overall my short time with it has been interesting. Definitely getting me to do harder workouts then I would of planned for myself. The progression in workout difficulty seems to work so far. I can see though as you go further out there is less adaptation. My next VO2 workout is at a 5.7 level and the one after that is at 5.3. Unless they plan for me to fail…I wouldnt expect to end up back at 5.3. Adaptations I am sure will come as I do more.
Just got in!!!
Should the progression levels all be 1s? The only one that’s not is VO2 max, which is a 2.3. I ask because it’s trying to “adapt” me from my scheduled 4.8 level sweetspot down to a 1.
I’ve been wondering about this, and looked at the public known issues list:
Is the root cause any workout uploaded via Strava? That indicates its a problem if I record on Garmin, sync to Strava, and let Strava sync to TrainerRoad (assuming that works).
My understanding (I don’t have a Wahoo computer), is that TR only pushes workouts to Wahoo. Completed outside rides must be synced back to TR using Strava. I believe you can also manually upload from Wahoo app to Dropbox? And then manually upload from Dropbox to TR? Is that a workaround to what appears to be a Strava-to-TrainerRoad issue?
I’m still unpacking all the AT info in this thread. I do not see a general FAQ but may have missed it. I just started and just want to be sure that I may not see any proposed adaptations for a while. I did not do a new ramp test but it seemed to mesh right into my existing Plan Builder plan. Do I get a prompt anytime an adaptation is proposed? Sorry for the newb question to all of you that are deep into this. So far the workouts seem on-target for for the last week or so.
Thanks!
I suspect it could be something like this. I’m no expert, but FIT files for an activity can contain information linking back to the structured workout being done. Maybe when synced via strava this doesn’t get transferred, which would make it much more difficult for TR to sync actual vs planned output in intervals. If so, it’s a significant problem. In the absence of that info, I assume they’d need much more advanced analysis of the activity. Makes sense that it’s taking awhile to sort out.
Its not hard, I can find source code with a quick web search.
GoldenCheetah is one proof-of-concept. Last night I delayed the start of a 2-minute interval, and intervals.icu correctly detected it. And Intervals is receiving my workouts via Strava.
I’ve thought about this as well, but it’s just way more work than I’m willing to do. The reason I use all this stuff is for the convenience factor so I don’t have interest in manually handling things at all. And I’m fine with it being suboptimal as a result of that choice.
It’s also just not how I suspect most folks use TR. It should just work with the same process it always has rather than adding a new barrier imo.
Absolutely. Just saying there might be a workaround, for the sufficiently motivated.
@NickSilcox, just raise your FTP by 1 watt, and the PLs will default to 1.0…easy!
