Action Cam Data Overlay - what is the best setup for creating race recap vids?

Just tried Garmin VIRB software on my Mac, pulling my .FIT data off Strava and using another guy’s footage (from the same group in a group ride). 0 to published on Youtube in about 30 minutes. Try it out!

Thank you!!! I cannot beleive how tedious it is in virb (amongst a bunch of other tedious things in that app) to sync the data to multiple video files. Just give me the option to span the one file across multiple videos holy hell. While we are here, why not picture-in-picture? This is the hill I choose to die on.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but has anyone used this Telemetry Overlay app? It’s $150 and there’s no demo, so I’m curious to hear if anyone has any experience with it before I pay for it.

Well, ended up getting a license and went out on a ride with my GoPro to try it out. It was a snap to use and I’m pretty happy with the results, but I’m not sure it’s a massive improvement over Virb for the price.

Here’s the video I put together: Biking from Kelly to Antelope Flats in Grand Teton National Park. - YouTube

The overlay looks very good and professional, well done. The uploaded video is of low quality at 360p. It would be interesting to see a short higher quality version of the video.

Yeah, the HD and 4K versions are still “processing”, not sure how long it’ll take for them to show up (I’ve never uploaded a video to YouTube before).

Hi there. Newbie here, guys. I hope you don’t mind bumping this thread, cause I’d like to share my 2 cents about making race recap videos. I’ve heard mixed reviews about using the GoPro Hero 4 Session with data overlays, but it’s worth a shot if you already have the camera. Another option is to use a Garmin headunit with the VIRB software, which works well for a lot of people. When it comes to video editing software, I’ve had good experiences with Movavi (https://www.movavi.com/). It’s got a lot of great features and it’s easy to use. Anywya, just wanted to share my thoughts and revive this thread, guys.

Virb is ok but time consuming. It is pretty good to also record your head unit screen and ovelay it.

Hi all,
I’m hoping to resurrect this thread to determine the best way to overlay data for both the latest GoPro Hero 13 black or Insta360 Ace Pro 2. I’m in the market to purchase one this holiday season and ease of editing with data overlay is a priority for me. It seems the previous use of the Garmin virb edit app is no longer compatible, so if I want to overlay power data, this seems like a major miss. Can anyone comment on using either camera platform as much of the info online is no longer relevant?

None are that simply but Telemetry Overlay was the best I could find.

See a sample video.

Thanks for the quick response. This video looks like an example of a cycling video with data overlay. However, the video doesn’t detail how to add that data and from what camera being used. That is the part I am more interested in: How to add power data and which camera is best for this purpose? Both the latest go pro and insta360 ace pro 2 have built in GPS, but what if I want to use my Garmin head unit’s data? Insta360 looks easy, but can anyone confirm what to do for GoPro? Especially without having to have professional editing software like Final Cut?

You can check out my YouTube channel if that’s what you’re looking for. I use GoPro 12, Garmin VIRB edit and Final Cut Pro. I green screen the data and overlay it on the video. I don’t know how you would do good looking overlays without a professional editing software.

I see that the video of the race is three hours long, may I ask how the picture quality is set during the race, and also whether there is an external mobile power supply, the gopro will sometimes overheat and turn off automatically

External battery. It won’t overheat if it is moving because of wind. I record in 4k 30 fps.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll try setting it up like that. Wanted to ask in more detail, how did you set the 4k30 image quality, and the exact bit rate, I use the highest image quality and the resulting video file is very large.
Also, where do you normally install the external power supply, and can you take a picture of it, thanks a lot!

No problem, it was a gopro 10 and Telemetry Overlay have tutorial videos on how to use it.
