A Event Completed - Mixed Feelings With Result

This is the part I want to talk about. I feel like I’m either doing this or I’m about to fall apart because I’m dehydrated every time. I just can’t seem to get it right.

I think these kinds of nuances are where you have to make some self coaching decisions and do a few of those extra long rides.

Plus, I seem to recall that you have to tell TR in the settings that you actually have 6 hours to train on certain days.

It sounds like the event was a success overall.

You pushed through a physically demanding course, beat last year’s position by nearly half, managed a solid nutrition and hydration plan, and executed pacing with intention. That’s not luck, it’s training. You rocked the race!!!

All in all a pretty decent result. It is hard to compare two different years, but being 70+ places further up in the results is pretty solid.

A couple things you mention ring a bell with me. I can’t say I am a fan of TR’s approach to adding volume, especially for Master’s athletes. When I let TR add volume to my plan it added a 30 minute endurance ride to an off day. I really felt like it reduced my recovery by having me do a workout on what was a rest day and for the life of me I have no idea what it was trying to accomplish with a 30 minute ride that is a bit too much to be a recovery ride and not long enough for any meaningful adaptations (Inego San Milan says 60-75 minutes is about the minimum for adaptations with a Zone 2 workout). I think I would have benefitted much more from adding time to an existing endurance ride, especially when my longest TR session are an hour or two shorter than some of my races.

I think both @Brennus and @AJS914 had great feedback.

All I can say if your race is going to be 6 hours, then despite what TR has in the plans, you will greatly benefit by having at least a hand full or rides that are nearly close to that or building up to that. Not only is it great training but it’s also a great self-check so that you can self-calibrate. Good job on following through on a successful performance.
