5 second power: do you consider yourself a sprinter?

Cat 2 Crit racer, 88kg, FTP 350.

My max wattage breakdown:
1s - 1507
5s - 1423
10s - 1337
30s - 1031

I do not consider myself a sprinter. I’m usually leading out my teammates for a sprint if we’re in the bunch. I much rather prefer to make a breakaway as I feel much more capable of winning a sprint out of a break than in a bunch with the pure sprinters.

I dont know if you agree/disagree, but I find at the pointy end of things the power numbers are all “close enough” to each other. What I’ve found really separates those who excel at bunch sprints from the rest is the race craft and not the watts. Knowing where to be, which wheels to follow, when you need to get out of the box seem to make the difference.

I would say I am a sprinter, 5 second power showing 1,805 but my ftp is just barely at 2.5 w/kg @ 97.5kg. I am less than a year into road cycling and training and hoping to get above 3 w/kg soon.

This is super interesting - and depressing in equal measure.

Just reviewed my power files from some Cat-4 crits I did this summer.

My PR 5-sec power for this entire year was 1330w achieved on a countryside easy ride when I raced my friend up a short hill.

My best crit sprint finish 5-sec power was 1220w after just over 1 hour’s worth of riding around Thurxton race circuit in August.

So just under 10% drop on PR after an hour of riding - not unexpected I guess.

At 98Kg this power means I am definitely not a sprinter and regrettably am not a climber either - so I have work to do :rofl:

I’ve not trained short sprint power before so wonder if I could see a bit more (maybe hitting 1500) with some structure and hard effort? …

Im a different guy (but still 100kg!) similar power (2200), but unless I’m fresh those numbers aren’t happening. 1400 was my highest recorded on the garmin, peak power was on a lab test

I hit higher peak watts at the beginning my road training as I was mostly riding bmx (which basically sprinting and bike control) and MTB. As I have been training more endurance my peak sprint has come down a little but my ability to hold high watts for a longer duration has improved.

Wow! 2000+ is amazing in anyones book - you guys must have legs like bodybuilders? :flushed:

Personally I used to be a strongman and powerlifter, so it was all about the raw power! Now, it’s not so desirable it that’s fine image|375x500

Living in flat Florida, 41 is about all I’ve got. This segment was a couple weeks ago. Kicked it off with only 1300 watts while trying to chase down my Cat1 buddy.

I would have considered myself a sprinter. Its something I used to work one once a week. Not so much my 5 sec power. But my 20 sec power. Being able to react to someone elses sprint and going over the top. Or get onto a wheel and being able to sprint again. 20 sec power is good for 200-300m also depends on the road surface, wind, and other factors Winning a sprint has little to do with your peak power in training but what you can do at the end of a race. I was hitting 1460w, peak, 20 sec was 1180w. And I won sprints at 900w. Winning as a sprinter also means, looking at the finish, the wind, what ideal position you can be in. The road surface, is it flat, does it kick up.

If I listened to everyone what there peak power is, which apparently was a lot more than mine but cant get onto a podium then I am not a sprinter.

My advice, work on 20 sec power. Find a stretch of road and do 20 sec MAX efforts. Come into them rolling at 90 cadence and sprint. or almost a stop and sprint. Work on your “kick” which would be your 1-5 sec power.

Sprinting well takes practice and more to it than just numbers. Hope some of this helps.

For me @ 70-71kg,

Peak - ~1350w
5s - ~1250w
15s - ~1050w
20s - ~990w

Drops off after that. Those are all on group ride sprints though. In a race though, its quite a bit less, since the final lap or 2 are generally super hard, I am lucky to hit 1100w peak and hold 900 for 5 sec. I am not a sprinter! Also not a break away guy though. I am probably more a 45s-1m guy

Positioning and timing is the key though, I just cant nail it, maybe with more practice it will come though?

I couldn’t tell you if I’m a sprinter or not. I only race MTB and CX, so there aren’t as many opportunities for head to head sprints. That being said I sprinted my team mate to the line at the end of a 50 mile race this weekend and beat him.

Your data is wrong. Power doesn’t drop off that rapidly during the first few seconds of exercise. (Are you using a Stages power meter, by chance? They often throw out bogus data at very short durations, although other brands often do as well.)

I know this is an old thread. Wondering if you have ever attempted (or seen others achieve) an update to those Fatigue Resistance PD charts to show the data relevant to TSS (as opposed to raw Kj).

(I might be missing something as to why Kj is a better unit than TSS for this particular purpose, but as far as I can tell TSS should more accurately reflect the work that’s been done).

I raised a support ticket with TrainingPeaks but was summarily handballed to their Facebook group which was disappointing. I can’t stand and don’t use Facebook.

KJ is more reliable than TSS and better represents fatigue comparably speaking, especially for more glycolytic riders.

Fair enough… but then why bother with TSS in the first place…

Frankly, I ignore TSS these days.

Still useful for CTL/ATL/TSB though (of course with an understanding of the limitations of these…)
