2025 CX race season

Don’t delude yourself into thinking Challenge HTLRs are worth it… Just get the regular TLRs.

Pirelli Cinturato M in 35 does the trick just fine, actually, my wife has been getting along really well with that tire.

Conti Terra Speeds are a death trap on grassy off cambers, but killer fast on grass crits.

Mounted my 38 Vittoria Mix on the Roval C38 and they blow up to around 41! Ooof. Fine for the front, but awfully tight in the rear. About 3mm on each side. I might put some frame protection tape in there to get me through the weekend. I could put the Trigger back on the rear as they measure like 37. Course will be dry and fast. Just a lil worried about some wheel flex.

I run 38s on my Crockett for gravel, but it really changes the handling and makes it feel much less responsive. I think 35s might be a nice compromise, but there are not many making 35s now. The Cinturato mixed might be worth a look.

I’ve been pretty happy this with the Tufo Swampero in a 36. It’s labeled a gravel tire, but it’s great for cross. I’m using them on Stan’s Avion rims running 21f/23r psi with a ~205 lb bike+rider weight.

I upgraded my wheels this week from Reynolds AR41’s to Roval Terra CL’s. I lost 1/2 pound which is great but going from a 19mm internal width to 25mm is what sold me. Gained 2mm in width with the same tires. Felt good today at Trek Cup even though the legs didn’t.

What tires were you running?

Challenge Flandriens. I need all the nub I can get. Today’s course probably would have been best with Chicanes. Dusty.

Had a terrible race today. 41/51, had nothing on the climbs. Has me rethinking TR’s CX plan.

Legs just felt as if they where maxed out meanwhile I had the bike on reverse. :man_facepalming:t2:

Find a field, do some intervals, invite some friends, make a course, take your CX bike onto singletrack. As mentioned prior, TR is not set up for CX

I was thinking about that. Right now TR is giving me One Anaerobic and Two Vo2 workouts per week, I’m thinking drop a Vo2 and practice some CX skills. I don’t think all the Vo2 is helping me out anyway.

That’s a bad take in my opinion. You can build a hell of an aerobic engine on the trainer which will benefit you greatly in any discipline. I look at CX similar to MTB where getting time on the terrain w race-like efforts is really important (both for skills and fitness), but should be combined with structured intervals to build additional fitness that is often hard to replicate by just doing CX or MTB training. That’s why many elite MTB and CX riders spend a bunch of time on their road bikes, it’s just easier to get quality structured training in. Specificity to the discipline is really important, but that doesn’t negate the benefits of more general training.

My comment was regarding the race/specialty phase. You can defo build an engine on the trainer and one the road in base and build. Can’t practice barriers and remounts on the trainer.

Took 6th Saturday after a 5th roll call up. Pretty happy with that. I feel with a better call up, bridging up to the top three/four would have been more manageable. I had 5th right there, after making up close to a 20 second gap to get to 6th on the last lap. 5th just had me at the line.

I’m not really following the TR CX stuff. I’m following some training weeks Adam Myerson had put out there along with some Katy Compton ‘secret sauce’ workouts.

I’m trying to do all my workouts on the cx bike or mtb. So far it’s paying off. I’m not the fittest out there, but I sure am one of the better bike handlers and finding free speed here and there. I did some z2 on the trainer, but tomorrow I’ll do 3x15 or 4x10 threshold on the cx bike on a course I built. Weds will be starts. I’m also running/sprinting on the days I do my cx starts. I made up probably 10 spots combined on the stair runup over the course of the race.

Is this in addition to the one CX race you’re doing? This feels like a lot. Maybe one vo2 and and a threshold day (front loaded in the week), cx day, rest z2/endurance?

I’ve had exactly the same experience with that plan, but it was several years ago. Way too much 1-3min work, which wasn’t improving my vo2max any further. No sustained power work, so FTP dropped and with it my ability to recover from short efforts, and my abiliy to grind through the mud. I only felt better once I stopped all the short power work, and did sweetspot and threshold work instead.

Also, if you look at the power from a cx race, the longest high-power spike is likely the start, and it’s rarely even 30s. Everything else is usually 5s or less. I think all the minutes-long vo2max work might be good for building an engine, but it’s not specific enough for race prep. Maybe if you do that plan before the season starts, but not during the season.

It like I’m living everything you said word for word, that is exactly my experience now.

This had me think about dumping the Saturday word and replacing it with CX drills or Sweet Spot work.

I was even going to use TrainNow to let the AI pick the Sweetspot workout but for some reason TrainNow been only picking low PL workouts which won’t work, guess I’ll do it the old ways.

Nice work! I had the total opposite experience. :man_facepalming: Was on the third row but lined up behind someone who completely missed their pedal several times in the start. Put me almost at the back and stuck behind traffic for most of the first half of the race. Felt strong in the second half, but was so far behind. Oh well, that’s the way CX goes. On to the next one!

Are we expecting a new Canyon Inflite for 25-26 season? Canyon only have two options online and both are on sale. Seems like it has been a few years since the Inflite got an upgrade?

That bike really grew on me, I remember when it first came out I thought it was goofy looking.

Seeing it in person did it for me.

I hope that they keep it CX geo. They already have there gravel bikes.

Hopefully as long as MvDP keeps racing CX, Canyon will keep making a dedicated bike. I was the same - didn’t like it when it came out - but now think it looks good. The color that Niels Vandeputte was racing on Saturday looked very nice.
