Same as every year… lose weight. Low last year was 190lbs and 285W right before the baby arrived. I want to hit 170lbs and 310W (Magical 4.0W/kg). Currently sitting at 205lbs and 235W, so I’ve got a bit to go.
“Everest” before my birthday. Really, I want to do a 30k ft ride while I’m 30 years old.
I retired this fall (yay!), but it’s led to me moving my workouts to the morning, which means I’m consuming calories far earlier than I was in the past, and being constantly hungry for the next 12 hours until bedtime, and that has led to putting on weight. I was already higher than i wanted to be, so I need to figure out how to lose that weight and keep it down. I am never successful with the “train well and diet at the same time” approach, so I’m seriously considering just dropping any cycling goals other than putting in very high mileage to drop weight and then worrying about structured training after that. That would make my one and only A goal of 2022 being “finally getting my diet and weight under control”.
After 10+ years of almost no exercise other than cycling, I started using Dialed Health a few months ago. I’ve been very happy with the results I’m seeing from the kettlebell program, so 2 strength workouts a week is my next big goal.
I’ve got a few gravel races already lined up, but I think I’ll just earn the participation trophies rather than race, in order to stick to that A goal.
Finally, a huge part of retiring fairly early was wanting to travel more and ride/hike in new and beautiful places. This fall I hit Boulder and Bentonville. I need to start lining up more of that for 22.
I think I have the capacity for 350 FTP so I want to get there. It’s a stretch goal for sure I’ve been hovering 310-330 most of this year.
Weight: was 180 most of in season this past year. I wanna do 175 but mostly focusing on reducing body fat more so than total mass. If I don’t get there but power improves, I’m not too worried.
power 330 by March; 350 by June (road bike)
weight / body fat reduction processes: veggies for breakfast, sleep 8h consistently, dry February and alcohol thereafter only for social events
have a run base to begin marathon training in June
For 2022 I want to be healthier. To reach that goal at age 53 I need to quit crashing my MTB and lose weight. To quit crashing my MTB I just need to ride within my capabilities and realize it’s better to live to ride another day. My latest crash was caused by trying to get maximum air time on a jump and one of my feet unclipped on the landing. To lose weight I just need to cut down on my portion sizes and cut back on the alcohol…no special diets necessary. I’m 5’10" and currently weigh 180 pounds. I’ve had my best results on the bike at around 162-165 pounds in the past as I carry a bit of muscle from weight training in my youth.
I had this realization a few years ago too. I don’t hit the crazy stuff any more. I just ride around or walk over if I have to. I don’t care if my friends give me shit. I’ll still be riding in my 70s if I can. The odds of that go way down if I feel the need to do crazy things every time someone says “send it” or I watch a YouTube video that makes me want to be sponsored by Red Bull.
My goal is to qualify for USAT nationals in my age group at the sprint distnace, and because that depends more on who shows up to the races I’ve chosen, my measurable goals to try and hit that are below.
Lose another 10 pounds by the end of January (down about 15 since September)
I put on a lot of weight due to life stresses over the past year. Let’s hope 2022 is better than 20/21!!
Outcome goal: Lose 50 lbs and gain 50W to perform well at my A race at the end of July (Rooted Vermont) and also at the Pan Mass Challenge in early August.
Process goals:
Cut junk good
Track macros and record via Myfitnesspal
Stay consistent with MV TR plan as laid out through 2022
Strength train 2 days per week year round
Work on sleep hygiene, including consistent bed/wake times and getting 8+ hrs
My 2022 goal is to get my W/kg over 4.2 and to be able to say the whats-best-in-life Conan line on my middle aged group rides. I plan to do it by being more consistent than ever in training and keeping my diet and sleeping on the spot.
This was/is my grand plan for almost every season recently, and it fails miserably come April or May with the arrival of fair weather unstructured outside rides.
Having thought about this, I’m now going to nail my colours to the mast.
Reach 4.5 W/kg by dropping 1 kg to get down to 74kg, and increasing FTP to 333W from a current 300W - deadline for weight loss 1st Feb, deadline for wattage goal is 9th Oct (my birthday!).
Focus on at least one good hour-long MTB training skills session per week. I’m a good bike handler, but I know there are skills I need to work on. Focus is on using the UK RSR MTB guidelines.
Continue to eat healthily, (100g+ of protein per day, lots of veg) to maintain a fat percentage of 7% or lower (As measured on Withings scale).
Continue 100% compliance rate on TR workouts and extra Z2 (using LV plan). Try to increase commuting hours from 3 hours a week to 5 hours a week by taking longer routes home!
Add in one strength session per week in the gym, and try to hit strength training benchmarks consistently.
Tried to make these SMART targets that focus on process goals - time to get on it now!
I’m in for writing down the random thoughts I’ve had in my head!
Main Goal:
-Sub 10 hour SM 100 attempt
Secondary Goal
-Carry improved fitness/better body composition into CX season
How I will achieve:
-Focus on process rather than outcome
-Consistently stay on mid volume training plan
-Minimum of two full body strength workouts a week
-Minimum of 15 mins of Daily mobility work
-Be more consistent with my diet… which unfortunately means less beer. I tend to stick to a healthy well rounded diet until I have a few beers with the boys… then I eat like a dump truck . The goal is to only have a few drinks no more than 1 day a week.
I’m hoping I can get to a new level of fitness this upcoming year, and am very hungry to do so as I just got on my first shop team… and I wanna be super rad.
The dust has (sort of) settled on my 2021 now following my (cancelled-after being rescheduled from October) A-Race two weeks ago.
I’m going to put some goals out there now for 2022 for (a sense of) accountability.
1)I’d like to see my FTP reach 320W - the number that was my first TR FTP (due to Virtual Power). I’ve had a sense of stagnation having never seen my Career PR’s/Power Curve. It looks like I am in fact faster, but I’d like to work towards removing all doubt.
2)Nail my A-Race in October. 100km (mate’s trying to convince me to do the 170km) technical XCM race. This means going faster in terms of Power, and also improving the segment times on the technical/down segments.
Ways I’m going to achieve this.
•I am going to try and increase my Base volume, either literally by moving to the HV SSB plans, or nailing the additional endurance sessions.
•I am going to again focus on the key Workouts during build and reduce additional riding stress.
•Keep tackling more difficult MTB trails. Spending time on Grade Five trails has really altered my perspective when it comes to hitting the three’s and four’s that are in my races.
