2020 Training and/or Racing Goals

My 2020 goals:
Cat 2 State CX Champion
15,000km
340W for 20 minutes

Here are mine :

  • Put my girl on a gravel bike
  • More weekend rides and a gravel trip with GF and/or friends (probably tuscany!)
  • Commit to running more frequently and with less intensity to overcome knee pain
  • Commit to strength training twice a week (focus on hip strength for running then overall strength and lifting)
  • Work on my catch and body rotation (swim)
  • Get a top 20 result or better on one of my OLY tris
  • Show up to a few CX or crit races to try new stuff !

Got pumped up by all these Cali crit races videos  Crit scene is probably not as exciting here but there’s only one way to find out!

01:50:38 today.

…Do I tick the box?

I’m feeling a little depressed now about 2020 goals.

My kids school is open next week only because it’s a private school run by a couple of arrogant phds. Public schools are closed to minimize the Covid19 infection rate. I think we should probably keep my kid home next week. The week after is spring break and no way am I sending him to camp. I can see having to home school him for the next 3-4 weeks.

In light of worst case scenario projections worrying about using the right training plan or worrying about FTP seems a bit pointless for the rest of the year!

I am 205lbs (93kg) and 250W FTP for 2.68wkg now. I turn 40 this month.

Goal is 180lbs (82kg) and 328W for 4.0wkg. Will not be easy but it is only early March and I am new to structured training so power gains are coming quick. So far I have made zero effort on weight loss. I have a very easy 15lbs to lose. The other 10 wont be so easy and I will see how it goes once I start to focus on weight loss a little more.

I’ve updated my 2020 goals - I did a race yesterday - my goal is to er….do another this year!

I’ve tried to set ambitious goals and they failed! Power goals haven’t been too bad 240-290 watts in a year.

I organically lost 20 pounds over the last 2 years which is great.

But I’d still like to lose that last 10-12 more. I made a concerted effort to lose that during base miles and utterly failed! I tracked every calorie for two months, lost a few pounds initially, and then nothing and then gained back the few. :frowning:

Already hit 258w ftp after SSB1 SSB2 GB all in HV. Also, racing cancelled until May initially due to the virus, so going to update goals…

Going back to SSB2 until mid April and then will make a decision about whether to do specialty or not based on when racing is likely to start back up. But, either way want to do another base & build (sustained power build) cycle before hill climbs (hopefully) come round in September & October. My current thinking is that a 275w FTP would be a real good result from completing this!

Aim to podium an open hill climb.

Still want to maintain UK cat 2 (not sure how that will work if races are cancelled for most of the year).

Lots of cancellations and postponements.

The new date for Marathon Nats puts an 8 week hole in my calendar. Time for some more adjustments…

I don’t think I’ll race this year. So one, maybe two more years and that’s it.

FTP is 355 right now, so fitness is good. I’ve gained all the weight I lost for last year, and most of it has been muscle mass – so 1min and 5min power are higher, and core strength is a lot better. Last year, 350w@71kg, now 355w@76kg.

My only goal now is 750 hours of training this year – cycling and rowing combined. If I do the volume and just do the “two hard days each week” I’ll be ok.

Can you link to this? I’d like to keep up to date.

Thanks! If this thread is to hold any value I’ll have to…

Sub 4h Marathon
Sub 2h30 Olympic

There’s an outside chance I can do the 140.6 in October…but if Strava is to be believed I have a sub 24 5k in the bag

Sub 24min 5k :medal_sports:

Here’s the USAC post:

https://www.usacycling.org/article/2020-usa-cycling-national-championship-update

You can also sign up to the USAC mailing list and you’ll be kept up-to-date.

I thought it was automatic when you registered for a license, but I guess not? Or did @Nate_Pearson use a burner account to register with USAC so he’s just not getting the emails?? :face_with_monocle:

I didn’t think it would be possible, but I’m going to throw a “hail mary” and shoot for a 2020 goal of getting my FTP w/kg to 5.0 +. Currently I’m sitting a little bit over 4.3, but am on track to continue to lose another 10 pounds of fat in the next 3 months. I weight 75kg (166lbs) at the moment, with a 320w FTP. My goal will be a 30 watt increase of FTP and a 5kg drop in body weight which will put me spot on at 5.0.

I also have a goal to get a KOM on a local climb up here in Northern Utah. I know a lot of people may not love Strava and KOM chasing, but for me this is a great goal especially since there aren’t races atm. This climb is ridden every year by the Tour of Utah. It’s not a race finishing climb, so I think it’s possible for an all out effort on a good day to get the KOM, by my estimates at least. I feel this will be a good motivation tool for me

Some general process goals include:

  • Not eating after 7pm unless I’m training in the nights (I always make bad food decisions at this time of night)
  • Continue to make a daily and weekly food plan with whole grains, fruits, and veggies
  • Stick to training plan with >90% consistency and complete 100% of interval / breakthrough workouts
  • Strength and core maintenance 2 days per week until another race comes up on the calendar
  • Increase interval duration to over 1hour 15min total per workout at 100% FTP (5 x 15min FTP, or 4 x 20 (?)) by getting “in the zone” during threshold work instead of getting distracted, coming into interval days rested, and using music and fueling better to lower RPE

As we move along, I’m convinced racing is not likely this season and autumn mtn bike escapades are also unlikely.

Making lemonade from lemons and going to spend rest of year into winter developing a deep aerobic base and addressing some posterior chain issues I never get around to.

It’s always been base, build, race, rest, repeat. Maybe this race free season is a fitness gift in disguise.

I reckon there will be a lot of big engines next year when things get going again!

I started a thread asking this very thing: When Outside Racing Resumes - #10 by robcumine

Many will have big engines or burned out. Either way, I hope we get to find out later this summer. Still hoping nationals goes off Early August.
