- Maintain and further my cycling fitness level;
- Add running back into the mix, with an ambitious (for my quite average self) half-marathon target for the fall;
- Do it all while being sharper on the business front, and smoother on the family front.
Hardly a black sheep!!! I enjoy training more than racing. Pinning on a number always more about challenging myself and trying to set time trial PRs than concern over if I beat anyone. Sure, it’s fun to stand on a podium and win some socks now and again. But that’s a bonus not the driver.

-Mark
- 300W FTP (currently 247)
- 3k miles riding (2.7k this year)
- 100k miles climbing (83k this year)
- be able to stick with the pack for the weekly crits (C race)
- reach cat 4 in at least 1 discipline (will probably have the race #s but I’m not planning to cat up without a podium)
Nice thread… and great goals from great to small - thanks for sharing, everyone. Here’s mine…
- Get to 3.4 w/kg by getting raw watts to 250 (227 now) and weight to 160 (174 now) by June
- Place top ten in my AG in Gran Fondo segments, targeting GA and Asheville, NC (roller segments are where I have a chance - technique and timing over raw power)
- Stick with TR through the spring, summer and fall in the beautiful, sunny south where I live
- Lay down a 500W minute around mid-May, anywhere, just for kicks…
- Put a smackdown on a couple of local bike buddies who I like a lot, but are also know-it-alls who talk to me like I just climbed on
Sometime in Apr-May at our TNW would be good.
Happy 2020, everyone!
Since my one 2020 race was cancelled. I’m a bit lost with goals
•Hit 350w FTP currently 342
•Crush C Grade Open (Cat2) races
•Place top 10 VRS Tour (RR TT and Crit)
•Melb to Warrnambool 265k scratch race.
•Hit 78kgs currently at 90
Process Goals:
- Improve consistency.
- Increase volume to 6+ hours a week
- Train once per week on the TT bike.
- Get back outside with the club (come on weather!!)
Outcome Goals:
- Improved FTP. Target 4w/kg over the next 18-24 months.
- Improved TTE at high % of threshold.
- 60 minute 40k TT. I don’t currently have a yardstick for this one and consider it a stretch goal. Especially as new baby is due right around the time of the a/b 40km TT events.
I’ve been trying to think about goals for this year. I’m doing Ride Across Britain again in September this year - 9 days +980 miles from Land’s End in the far south west of the Britain to John O’Groats in the far north east.
Connected with this, my goals are:
- Consistency - I want to be on the bike 5 days a week, doing structured work or proper training at least 3 days a week. I currently commute +50km a day 3 days a week, so if I up that to 4 days per week and do low volume trainerroad plans that should deal with the consistency.
- ride at least 10,000 km in 2020. I’ve done just over 8,000km in both 2018 and 2019, and in both years I was pretty inconsistent.
- Lose weight and gain fitness - pretty boring and standard goals, but these should just fall out of the training I will be doing and the consistency I hope I will achieve. The aim is to get down to 78kg by September. I’m 85kg at the moment so not much of a drop, but it’s enough that it’s really noticeable in terms of my performance. I want my watts/kg to be up over 4, which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch target.
My 2020 goals are:
- 90%+ success of completing the mainsets of my training plan
- To prevent myself from adding unnecessary training to plan which interferes with my ability to properly execute the spirit of the mainsets of my training plan
- Bike FTP to 320 or greater by October
- Run critical power to 330 or greater by October
- Lift weights twice a week to be better at my job as a firefighter
- Stay consistent, for me that starts at at least one TR workout every week. 2019 was appalling looking at my structured training.
- Fuel my rides properly, get better at eating breakfast, and then on the bike: eat, eat, eat.
- Tackle my back issues
- Suffer more in racing
- Become a better coach
2020 Goals:
-
Ride 10,000 plus miles
-
Train over 10 hrs. per week
-
FTP of 400 @ 75 kg
-
Get my Cat 2 upgrade on the road
-
Improve my diet
-
Podium or win a few races
I forgot to add that one major goal is mindset - to not stress if I miss a session, or get ill, or anything like that. Yes the training is important in a lot of ways, as are the related goals, but t’s all meant to be good fun. If I unavoidably miss a session or I’m simply not feeling like it, I’m not going to beat myself up for that.
- Survive increased volume for first time in 3 years.
- Get my Cat 2 upgrade using mostly non-weekly series points.
- Get to 4.4 W/kg FTP and 9.6 W/kg 60s avg.
- Lastly, not be afraid to deviate from my plan if things go sideways.
I’m just now rebounding from a setback that was a training oversight where my CTL dropped significantly then wound up sick for 3 weeks. 13W drop in FTP (estimated and maybe even more) and moving my A race to another one 6 weeks later.
I love this thread! Keep em coming!
They are motivational for me.
Love this… lol
Let me ask you…If you’re looking to incorporate more 2.5-3 hour trainer rides, why not get outdoors and do some of those outside? I mean wouldn’t these be mostly temo with some endurance and some sweet spot? Seems really doable outside. Or, do you just not like outdoor rides that much? Is it potentially a safety thing, a time efficiency thing, or do you really believe the trainer is most productive for even 3 hr rides?
Maybe it is due to where you live. Is it that hard to make these rides efficient in the Reno area? I’m down in the Sacramento area, and this area is great for these.
Thanks, for the feed back!
2020 Goals:
- Listen to my body and not mindlessly follow the TR plan
- Strength train throughout the year (was fast but wimpy in 2019)
- Add to MV plan (MV+) with 10-30 min Z2 rides after each workout
- FTP 315+ and/or 4.0 w/kg (was 298 FTP and 3.87 w/kg in 2019)
- Stay with front pack in Cat 1/Expert XCO Race Series (was front of mid pack in 2019).
Stretch Goals:
- Compete for a podium finish in Cat 1/Expert XCO race
- Go sub 8 hours in Lumberjack 100 (was 9:19 in 2017 as my first mtb 100)
Main goal - qualify for age group national team at duathalon.
In order to achieve this:
- Consistency - 3xTR workouts and 3xruns a week factoring in any illness/injury etc.
- Weight - achieve my desired race weight of 161lb (currently 168)
- Recovery - get at least 8 hr sleep a night at least 5 nights a week
- Injury/flexibility - foam roller and stretch at least 4 times a week to aid aero position on bike and reduce chance of injury.
These goals are all things I can control so no excuses. This will hopefully get me to an ftp of at least 315W (currently 295W) to achieve 4.3 W/kg and 5km time of 18mins (current pb 19:15). That should allow me to achieve my main goal.
Solid…
-
Not have any surgeries in 2020 (had two last year)
-
Increase volume significantly - 5000 miles up from 2300 last year (don’t have total hours readily available)
-
Race in at least one race this year. Some type of MTB race
-
Ride my first Century ride (or more)
-
10% body fat
-
FTP - realistic goal of 225 and big heinous goal of 250. Up from 188 before my current 1 month off bike due to most recent surgery…
Good luck to all as you work towards your goals this year!!!
Best goal here (and that includes mine)! Think as athletes we can be selfish at times about how much time and effort we spend training etc. I love this goal as big picture this is far more important.
The benefit of long indoor rides is far and away the time efficiency and consistency. Those little stops add up.
Exhibit A: 5 hours indoors. 282 TSS, 3625kj
Exhibit B: 5:20 outdoors moving time, 5:45 elapsed, 267 TSS, 3182kj
Plus I got to watch the entire extended edition of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King on the indoor ride ![]()
