I was thinking about this on Tuesday. Surely it would be better to say Sunday is the final stage if we get that far. If we have to stop before we will, but the final result will be at the end of Sunday no matter what.
The stages in the final week aren’t going to happen anyway (in full) due to weather or CV-19 whichever occurs first.
Better to have finishing line than it become a joke, and the deserved winner having a question mark against their result.
The UCI said a general screening of the teams is being carried out on Thursday and Friday in addition to the testing planned for the second rest day on Monday
Screening is virtually worthless…if they don’t have a fever, you aren’t going to catch anyone. the fact that RCS and the UCI have not increased the actual testing of the riders and entourages is telling.
Agreed 100% with the above suggestion that they set the finish for Sunday. Leaving COVID aside, the mountain stages are not going to happen as planned anyway.
Ganna is a beast. His numbers on that climb were insane.
WTH…Dennis was doing a super tuck on the descent…but with his aero bars, his chest and head couldn’t get very low, so they were above his hips. I can’t imagine that was actually more aero than staying in the aero bars. Dunno…maybe he tested it and it was good, but definitely didn’t look like it.
Yeah he was putting out 600w+ constantly on the climb and every time they show his values the power is above 500w, he’s a real beast. I guess his FTP is in the 480/500w range.
About Dennis super tuck Gianni Bugno, who is commentating on the Italian TV, said the same thing. However he doesn’t like super tucks in general.
Castroviejonhas always been aero AF, but his current position is too low in front, IMO…he has a constant “carriage return” going as he keeps creeping up on his saddle and then having to scoot back. That reduces your efficiency.
If he raised his pads a touch and extended his reach similarly, he’d lock his body in place, keep a similar position and improve his efficiency.
So Kelderman just under a minute down on Almeida with a cluster of guys just over 2 minutes down, including McNulty - so should be good battles on remaining stages, even if just for the podium. Almeida still looking really solid.
Pretty sure Ganna is technically faster than my first car which was a 1981 four cylinder four speed hatchback. It used to get the speed wobbles on the freeway at its highest speed.
Now I could jump on the back of a bloke with an insane FTP and go faster. Cost less in fuel too! A bowl of oats are a lot less expensive than petrol. How we have evolved!
I watched Brandon grow up here in PHX. Same club years ago and know his parents blah blah…Been texting his Dad throughout the Giro…even he is in shock. And yes, Brandon is that awkward in real life as his interviews. Very humble young man. We are all on pins and needles regarding week 3…uncharted territory so-to-speak.
Let him/them know there’s plenty of support for him here in the US!!! He’s been super impressive so far this Giro-no matter what happens he’s ridden like a podium contender. I hope local guy from around me-Joe Dombrowski-gets better/healthy and can help support him if they make it to the high mountains!
Great stage today. Amazing effort by João Almeida to keep pink into the third week. Kelderman really strong, will be interesting to see this battle next week.
