1000 watts for one minute. Is it true?

I would like to see what WVA can hold for a minute

WvA about 780 - 820w at the end of a stage 6 - 7 the one with the cat 4 towards the end of the stage (Thomas did 730w his best ever 1 minute power) ¿

Fresh… dont know, but very very few world Tour riders imo.

GT showed incredible consistency I’m glad he finished on the podium. Holding 800-900 watts for that long is mind boggling

Actually just tried to make a better estimate it going to be much closer to 800w than 900w (thats way to high imo), pure speculation

The figure of 730w for Thomas is correct though, he mentions it in his podcast.

Thinking about it a bit more I am not convinced any world tour riders can, Kilo track cyclist maybe.

You could work out the watts a track rider must produce in the Kilo in you know their cda, I think the other stats are generally known / published.

Can anyone work it out? I have seen 860 - 880 calculated but not sure how accurate that is. People make statements it is over 1000w for a minute but not seen any supporting evidence.

Maybe someone in the know will post.

Chris Hoy was about 27w per Kg of body weight peak watts, ~2500w

People interested in this thread might find this an interesting read.

The toaster but might have been posted in this thread before (or another one, I have read it before anyway)

“Pro track cyclist Robert Förstemann, of Germany, took social media by storm a few years back when he used his 74cm legs to toast bread in a 700w toaster. Olympic bronze medallist in the London 2012 team sprint and 2010 UCI World Champion in the same discipline, Förstemann pedalled on a static bike at around 700w for just over a minute, with the power he produced converted into heat energy thanks to the toaster’s filaments.”

Do you have a link for GT’s podcast? I searched it on YouTube but didn’t find much

It is on Spotify amongest others

Called - Watts Occuring

Think it was this one…

But it could have been the next one.

I don’t know which has better legs…somebody who can hold 1000W for 60s, or this thread?

Thanks for this.

I’m not too shabby on a bike, probably around 4.4w/kg which isn’t slow but isn’t close to some of the beasts on TR.

But 1000w for 1 minute I’ll never come close to reaching. Ever. Even 30 seconds sounds insane. I think my highest minute power so far, though I haven’t tested that specifically in awhile, is about 600w.

Crazy.

Thumbs up, mainly for this bit of your comment. Me too, such a down to earth lovely guy.

I’m personally less interested in the raw watts, as without the weight part of equation, it’s kinda like talking about raw horsepower alone. Interesting, but very limited.

I know a rider that produces insane watts, but he’s 117kg and very tall, so it doesn’t result in anything like the performance it leads people to think.

I’d be very interested to hear what peoples 1min w/kg are.

I’ve always wondered what the all time record would be.

10w/kg is a very solid benchmark to aim at for younger riders.

I suspect the record would be in the 12 to 13w/kg range. Which is truly nuclear.

I assume that Wout, MVDP and Alaphilippe would be very close to each other. What exactly their personal records are would be fascinating info.

I would love to get power data from these three. WVA’s efforts from this years tour would be epic

MVDP publishes almost all of his rides on Strava with power data. The big teams seem to be more secretive about their stuff.

Being secretive makes no sense. I don’t think anyone would have been able to match WVA this year even if they could see his wattage :joy:

Well done - this is a great achievement :+1:t2:

Out of interest what age are you?

I think I saw today that WVA did 700 for 3 minutes at one point during the tour.

The 3min @700w stem from this video: Van Aert SECRET Power DATA RELEASED!!! - YouTube

All the power data is from before this Tour i believe and he clearly stepped it up again this tour.

I can’t count how many riders referred to WvA as a moped or motorbike this tour

700w for 3 minutes might just be the most bonkers numbers i have seen mentioned in recent memory.

Nothing comes close to Indurain supposably riding threshold at 550w in terms of craziness.

Think his FTP might be higher than 400W, but his W’ is certainly up there too.

Actually wonder if anyone could reverse engineer his FTP from the tour TT via BBS or similar?

Must be way higher than 400w. He is pretty heavy, like 78kg. Even if we lowball and give him 6wkg he must be around 470w.
Probably closer to 500w.

He definitively has lost weight, but he’s 6’2 afaik.

About 75 - 76kg during the TdF
