You are right that 1hr of low z2 is going to have little effect on tomorrows ride, as long as you feel fresh going into it I would trust that over what a system tells you.
As long as you are planning on taking a rest day when you feel you need it, you will always be able to manage this part of the training better than the TR system in the short term.
You know your schedule, your life, how your legs are feeling etc so you can pick the right day in your calendar, sleep in a bit and do a perfect rest day… TR can easily adapt to the days you choose.
But, keep in mind the reason for the yellows is that TR is trying to periodize your TSS balance across the whole plan. So the yellow is mostly the software trying to achieve the goal you agreed to in your plan which is usually a nice steady buildup., not necessarily TR calling you out as to weak to finish a given exercise.
There’s not enough information in your post to judge the AI on this one, a link to your calendar or screenshot of the two weeks would be helpful.
I would see how you feel when you wake up, do you feel rested? Is it a stressful day for other reasons?
But mostly I would be fine working through a single yellow if I was confident I was within myself, or if it’s a hard workout, that I knew I would rest tomorrow.
Conceptually, you can think about RL/GL as a “ramp rate guard”. It warns if you jump little bit too far ahead i.e. increase load faster than recommended. This blog post talks about cycling TSS increase ramp rate specifically. RL/GL is generalized approach, taking into account various physical activities that generate different kinds of fatigue (aerobic and strength training, etc).
Of course, “faster than recommended” is very individual – longer TR knows your training history, the better it can forecast if additional load is productive/unproductive for long-term consistency.
Was it yellow the day you did Fletcher-1? I’ve seen that before - a day is marked as yellow, I decide to do an easy z2 ride instead of resting and that’s enough to bump the next day yellow as well, presumably because it thinks that workout has delayed my recovery. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a ~60 minute low end endurance ride trigger a yellow if I wasn’t already yellow though. But as said above it would depend on the context of what else you’ve been doing.
Can adjust the “Training Approach” slider to be more aggressive if you think RLGL is being overly cautious for you. Or just try a SS workout and see how you go.
See how you feel before the ride and listen to your body.
From what I think TR has said, the AI will “learn” information if you do the workout on a yellow day and have no issues and adjust for future recommendations.
Yea, the current day (the day I did Fletcher-1) was already yellow but the next day was not. After doing Fletcher on the already yellow day, the next day turned yellow.
Not to derail the topic but I just remembered something else strange. When I went to “Train Now” on the day I did Fletcher-1, the only thing suggested was “James” which is a high-end Zone 2 ride. Refreshing and restarting the app didn’t change this. I would think if the day was yellow it would have given me more choices (such as Fletcher-1) but James is the only one it would show.
As other athletes mentioned above, you can think of RLGL as “guardrails” to keep your training on track.
A yellow day is serving as a warning sign to let you know that you are building up more training stress than is ideal and that it could begin to impact how you’re feeling. Training on a day that is already yellow may indeed trigger the following day to turn yellow (or even red) as well.
Ultimately, though, you know your body best! If you feel up to your next Sweet Spot workout, then I’d say go for it.
Just take note of how you continue to feel moving forward through your plan.
