XC Race Tire Thread

currently BRR voting list as of right now for the new Conti XC tires:

Continental Dubnital Race Rapid 29x2.4 MTB Coming soon
Continental Trinotal Race Rapid 29x2.4 MTB 21 50 59
Continental Dubnital Race Grip 29x2.40 MTB 12 34 59
Continental Dubnital Trail Rapid 29x2.4 MTB 5 15 59

I voted for the Dub Race Grip to see what effect the compound has on rolling resistance. The more interesting comparison would probably be comparing the casings but I don’t see myself running a trail casing for my XC loops. Grip front Race rear would be my combo

where did you find it in stock?

In Germany, Bike Discount: https://www.bike-discount.de/en/continental-trinotal-race-rapid-29x2.4-tr-e-25-folding-tire

Holy crap I found a statical difference on pavement! Lap time in seconds, all run at 150 watts in an AA/BB/AA/BB/AA/BB format

:bar_chart: Results for the New Sets

Metric Set 1 Set 2
Mean 353.33 351.00
Variance 1.87 1.60

:test_tube: Welch’s t-test:

  • t-statistic = 3.07
  • p-value = 0.012

→ This is statistically significant at the 5% level (p < 0.05)

:straight_ruler: Cohen’s d:

  • Cohen’s d = 1.77

→ This is a very large effect size, suggesting a strong and meaningful difference between the two sets.

:white_check_mark: Interpretation:

These two sets are statistically different, and the difference is large both practically and statistically. This would be considered a clear separation in data behavior or performance.

What’s a Thurder Burt?

And, with as crappy as they are from a traction and a durability perspective, I’m not sure why these still get considered an XC Tire.

I’ve never had an issue with the durability of a thunder burt and also find them to be a nice pairing when used in the rear on fast and dry conditions.

My point is that there are better tires that are basically as fast while being more durable and having better traction. So, in a lot of cases faster in the real world.

If you go down to a 2.1" for smooth gravel, absolutely. I’d just never use them on any type of XC.

maybe not the 2.1…

Joe

I had TBs front and rear and had the front wash out in an instance on Powerline during a training ride last year, so learnt my lesson. Would still consider it as a rear in dry fast conditions, but the Rick is so good, and has way more traction, it is probably the better bet in the Schwalbe lineup.

I am running the 2.25 TBs F/R in SuperRace on my gravel bike at the moment and they seem very good in this situation.

Check out John K’s testing of the 2.1 - much better than anything BRR has.

100% agree with this. There are just better options than the Burt. Maybe with the exception of the 2.1 for smooth gravel.

You have a link to this or post #?

@jkarrasch here on the forum. flexfitbyjohn on IG is where he posts most of his tests.

He sure has a lot of stuff in his page. I couldn’t find his protocol though other than “Chung method”…..does he have it anywhere?

Joe

What size tires did you test?

2.4 dub 2.35 tb

Hey Joe, also have it on main blog HERE

As far as discussion here no way I’d run a TB at Leadville. Discussed this a bit with the Leadville 100 podcast on most recent episode HERE

LMK of any questions

Tb 2.35 is not bad as for a rear tire at Leadville. Definitely flat risk though. It would be bold as a front tire though

Rick front / tb rear! Awesome combo, never had issues with the TB, but I’m 145 and I usually get rid of tires before they are done

What kind of psi do you run at 145? I’m slightly heavier and use 15f-17r.
