XC Race Tire Thread

One of the two weighed 583 grams — I can still picture that number clearly.

The other one was somewhere around 595 grams.

I had 4 within 10g of this…

I have the same feeling and agree… would be good next month to vote up ‘trail rapid’ so that we can see the details and how it compares to ‘race rapid’.

Weights for a new Race King 2.2 Protection (586gm), a 2.4 Rapid/Race Dub (656gm), and a 2.4 Grip/Trail Dub (717gm).

Anyone find Dubs to be bouncy? I’m getting rim strikes yet over rock gardens it feels like my bike is bouncing over them over instead of rolling.

1 month Peyote thoughts:

I have Dual Peyote tires on a 100mm Epic hardtail. Just wanted to say that I did our local enduro race today and got PRs on like 6 segments, up and down. Which has surprised me. I’ve done this race probably 5 or 6 times now, and ridden these trails 20x over the years. And previously I used more trail focused hardtails with a lot more tread. I’ve seen some people talk about how scary the low tread is but I think you’d be very impressed with how much grip they actually have (on dry trails).

I felt so confident today it was weird. 2 of these trails I usually am sort of scared to ride but today I felt great. And these are trails that I think are 1 step above what you would find in a typical xc race anyways. Got a PR on the one and I would consider it to be the hardest local trail. Here it’s a black but in reality it’s like a high Blue. Lot’s of roots and holes.

Not to say I attribute the improvements all to the tires, but they didn’t seem to be much of a hindrance. I felt in control. Yes they lock up and skid faster than trail tires, but it doesn’t really happen that often. Usually I can slow down when I want to.

Usually I set them to 23r 21f at 185lb, seems to be working great. Haven’t tried lower though. The rear measures 2.35 and the front 2.30, on 25mm ID rims. Weight I already posted somewhere.

bouncy? i’m guessing you’re running the race carcass which being so light is likely to be less damped than the trail or other heavier tyres. its a natural trade-off - lighter is not always better

I’m running the trail carcass

Been running Rick/Rick in Speedgrip in Michigan and love the speed over my Rekon Races, but miss the grip up front a little. I think I’m going to run this combo at Leadville, but thinking of grabbing a different front for when I want a bit more traction. I assume Ray is the move?

Yep I ran Ray F, Burt R, and the back was only squirrelly in a couple of places, but nothing scary. Rick might have behaved, but the course changes enough that who knows. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I ran a Rick rear with a Ralph up front for more grip. Had previously been on Vittoria Terreno XC front and rear (pretty much slicks) and knew I wanted a little more grip up front to push it in corners but the Ray seemed too knobby coming from a smooth boi (plus the Ralph were supposedly faster). Wasn’t sure how the Ralph would perform as a front but it was amazing–was able to carry speed throughout corners and pedal out vs hitting brakes and re-accelerating. Ralph measured smaller than Rick in same size on same rim and graphics don’t match but very happy with my selection.

Weird, we had the same thing happen at our house after like three non-technical rides on an Air Trak. It’s now in the trash. Chalked it up to 200lb rider on a lightweight race tire but maybe there was more to it.

Just yesterday tested Ralph front/Rick rear on the Lumberjack 100 course (Big M) and liked it a lot. Ralph is plenty grip and rolls faster.

Same setup, my 2.35 Ralph measured 2.27 and my 2.4 Rick measured 2.29 at 17/18 psi.

I’m out of town for LJ, but was going to ride a couple laps next week on the Rick/Rick actually, but only because I don’t currently have a Ray, and don’t want to put the Rekon Race back on.

I’ve gotten a few rides in with Rick/Rick 2.4s, Addix Speed, on a set of M5 Pros. One of the rides was in wet conditions with a lot of roots and rocks. I was shocked how well they gripped. I saw a lot of other riders having issues and sliding on the roots, but the Rick’s held firm. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring them out again on a wet day.

Are those 7s supposed to be 2s? If they are 7s, tell me where to get them

Sorry, you are correct. Yes, 2.27. Fixed.

I concur… last weekend I had a 2hr XC race on a very hilly Georgia red clay/rocks course in the pouring rain. Didn’t get the result I wanted but the handling was always predictable.

My setup is a Ray front and Rick Rear.
