XC Race Tire Thread

Primary race goal is LT100. Weight and Rolling resistance are really important for LT100 and it is a low technical course. If the 2.2 rolls better than the 2.4 I would consider running it on the back. Having a 2.4 on the front would be nice for a couple of the sections to have more control.

Also, last year I ran 2.2 Race Kings which I think was the best tire for LT100. I also ride the 2.2 RK’s daily in Denver/Boulder area so I am used to 2.2’s.

What tyre pressure have people tried with the Dubnitals? Im 85kg so just looking for a rough benchmark.

Wolf Tooth Bike Tire Pressure Calculator spot on for me, as i’m 65kg my setup would means 0 for you. But it worth a try, it even has temperature compensation , riding conditions etc etc. Usually it gives me a little bit higher pressures than Silca, and it felt better

Second this. Last time I did lt100, I ran 2.35 Ralph and 2.1 Burt. The smaller tires roll faster on the paved sections, and there are a lot of them. There are only a few sections where you can lose the rear if you aren’t careful.

My Dubnital Rapid Race 2.4 weighed 651 grams and 649 grams

For me Dynaplugs are easiest to execute but the original Stan’s Dart plug was the most reliable after it is was in the tire (that was if you could get it in without breaking the top off or the plug separating from the tip).

I just mounted up and raced a Rick 2.25 rear and a Racing Ralph 2.25 front, the tires do not match with the Ralph having the older logos and the Rick having the new design. The tan walls are different shades. Did not know this when I ordered. The Rick in the rear blew up way bigger than the Ralph. All that being said I raced them this weekend and it might be the best combo I’ve ever raced! Fast and grippy. I do wish I went for the larger width but oh well… The OCD be damned.

Also, looks like the Dubnital 2.4 is 60 mm after being mounted for a week at ~20-25psi versus 56mm for a RaceKing 2.2 that has been mounted for almost 2 seasons. The RaceKings are on 27mm rims and the Dubnital are on 30mm.

That was the problem I had with the Stans Dart. Broke two of them trying to get the plug into the hole. I think they have replaced the plastic parts with metal now… so maybe the latest version works better.

What are we voting for this month?

Could always try to get the Dubnital Race Grip further up the list since the Race Rapid is in pretty secure position to win this month.

Does the Race casing have the equivalent flat protection as the Protection version of the Race King? Or is the Trail casing needed for that?

One thing that made the Race King Protection tires so popular is they had pretty decent flat protection for a light, low rolling resistance, tire. I wonder which version of the Dubnital is similar…

I’m not sure. I think someone asked that up-thread and never got an answer, so I’m not sure any of us know. It would be useful to know though.

without knowing the answer for certain I’d just assume the Dub Race Casing, Rapid Compound is the successor of the RaceKing 2.2" in every aspect. They just added more options to the portfolio with a Grip Compound (probably intended as a front tire) and the same tires with the Trail Casing, which have more robust sidewalls for rougher trails. But the successor of the RK 2.2" Protection should in my opinion be the Dub RC RC.

I voted for Specialized Air Trak Flex Lite T5/T7 TLR XC 29x2.35 since I didn’t think we had any reviews of that model planned, and it looked like it was close but not in winning position… I could have been wrong though.

+1 for the Air Trak (its crazy light for sure, 590gr if i remember correctly!? And mine was from the first batch which has had manufacturer defect: it leaked the air close to the rim, and on the sidewalls several places, while the “same” Fast Trak flex lite hold the air without any sealant in it, for more than 24hrs - 0 psi loss)

I asked earlier for Rapid/Trail option to be tested. I don’t think Rapid/ Race is the same. I think Pidcock assumed that and flatted at the Olympics and Littlr Sugar. And given some experience of the Racid/Race breaking down quickly it might very be a race only tyre

My Race King Protection 2.2 Black Chili both weighed around 590 grams. My new Dubnital Rapid Race 2.4 that arrived yesterday are 643 and 647 grams.
In other words, if you calculate the weight difference from 2.2 to 2.4 inch, it could very well be that the Dubnital Rapid Race 2.4 is the long awaited 2.4 ‘Race King’ Black Chili Protection.

I would think the Dubnital Rapid Race has similar (or better) protection as the Race King Protection Black Chili. The Dubinatal RR in 2.2 had very close weights to my Race King 2.2 Protection Black Chili, both in the low 600 gram range. I believe my Dubnital 2.2 were around 610-615. The 2.4 weighs about 30-40 grams more as expected.

You bring up the diagrams for the casing: I’ve only seen a generic diagram, no difference between the race and trail casing make up. Anyone else seen different?
