XC Race Tire Thread

did the 2.5 captain from Spec died before it was ever released? has anyone heard any more rumors about it potentially still being released?

Also saw a new (?) thunder burt race pro in one of this weeks xc world cup race bikes, it was on the front with a thunder burt read.

Does anyone know anything about it?

Schwalbe is in the process of moving existing tires like the Thunder Burt to the new casing that the Rick uses. I assume eventually all the popular tires like the Ray and Ralph will be on it as they streamline their lineup.

hope we see 2.4s on all of those. I don’t think the canyon was running 2.25 rear but I might be wrong. They did mentioned Ray 2.4 in the video.

Good question! I was pretty excited last year when the Specialized team was running The Captain at some of the WC races. Never heard anything more about it unless it just became the new Air Trak (old Renegade) or something? Back in the day The Captain was my favorite front tire.

If you looked at the tread pattern of the “captain” they ran last season and the tread pattern of the old Captain you had, they were nothing alike. It is interesting that they just totally did away with the “new Captain” after only using it in the WC for one season. I guess none of the riders were totally sold on it. None of their female racers used it, only Koretsky and Blevins, that I recall.

Just did 4.5 hours on set of race rapid Dubnitals. Conditions weren’t ideal here at the start as it had rained heavy overnight here in the UK.

I was riding at Cannock chase which is a man made trail centre. A lot of the older section have small polished pebbles and everything struggles with grip on them. The dubnitals did prettt well but there were a few slippy moments. Same as on the roots which were slippery. As the trail dried out and I got used to them I really like them though. Seemed to be plenty of grip and tried them on some short gravel fire road sections and they rolled well. Today wasn’t really the conditions to see how fast they run and if I wasn’t preparing to run them for Leadville they wouldn’t be a tyre I would choose for Cannock.

They seem robust - no issue with punctures etc and I was running liners for the first time which I think saved me a rim ding as I hit a rock drop too hard and def felt the tyre compress and hit the liner.

I tried 19 f and 20 r and also 21 f and 22 r. The lower pressures felt better but I ran the higher pressures in the second half when the trailers were drying out. I will prob split the difference and try 20f and 21 r at some point soon. I’m 185lvs currently for reference.

As Dubnital will win this month voting by a mile at BRR

What should be the next to put some votes?

  • Air Trak Flex Lite 2.35 ?

  • Trinotal Race Rapid 2.4 ?

  • anything else i missed? Its almost hard to find a tire in the BRR vote list which is for MTB :frowning:

I hope these two you mentioned will be the tested tyres for the next two months.

Also curious about the Bontrager Vallnord and Sainte-Anne.

I want to see the trinotal

without any idea how fast it is… all i can say is that it grips better than the old CrossKing, it just feels great as a front tire. I ran dub/dub, now changed to trinotal/dub, and at least for me on very loose - small rocky surface it increased my confidence level by a mile

I haven’t been able to find a trin anywhere. I was running a dub dub it is a bit sketchy. If anyone is looking for a dub in trail grip let me know. Almost new still had the hairs on it

I’d like to see the maxxis reaver tested, but that’s a gravel tire so not sure many people here are interested.

I know going by how a tire “feels” is not data, but I swapped from the Reaver to the G-One RS because the Reaver felt really slow.

I’m also curious about the trinotal, really curious anout tri/dub vs mezcal/peyote combos

The reaver has been tested, you just have to scroll almost all the way to the bottom of the CX/Gravel tires to find it…

Thanks! I didn’t know.
Bottom of the chart then … that says it all …

So the Trinotal offers better grip in corners on very loose - small rocky surface than the Dubnital. Does it feel better in corners on other surfaces too? Like sandy, loose over hard pack, wet, etc?

They haven’t tested the new Reaver with HyprX compound.

yet to try in wet, but its better on every surface, maybe apart from smooth tarmac…but my absolute favorite for that is still the Peyote
