Got you added

You’re all very dedicated or crazy cyclists!

I won’t be joining, as I’m planning an outside ride Saturday. I haven’t been outside in the last three weeks, and this is my last opportunity until the new year, so I’ll be out on my fatbike in the snow for four hours - a different kind of suffering than 4 hours indoors :snowflake::snowflake::+1:t3::+1:t3:

Here’s a song to help prepare you all - appropriately named Disaster.

Enjoy your 4 hours of Disaster - I’m looking forward to reading reports on how it went

D - 48 hours!

time for a bit of planning, and some opportunities for learning?

  1. position on the bike, comfort for a long rides. how does your seat and favourite pair of shorts cope?
  2. fuelling for a long ride - what works well for you, what doesn’t, any gastric issues?
  3. hydration - water/electrolytes/carb mix/beer - what’s your poison?
  4. motivation and mental strength
  5. caffeine and supplements - noticeable differences in RPE etc?
  6. muscular endurance

Probably lots of stuff I have missed, but this is a great chance to see how you would perform over a long ride, and if you are used to enurance/long distance how you can fine tune and improve.

I did the half and here were my takeaways/targets:

  1. Fatigue snuck up on me - I fuelled well through the whole ride and felt great. Until I didn’t. That last sweet-spot into microburst felt ok (not great) but I felt I didn’t need to eat for the final little endurance leg. ā€œ60%,ā€ I thought, ā€œPiece of cake.ā€ It almost killed me. Takeaway: Never skip a chance to eat.

  2. I do well with coffee - cold brew coffee in one bottle, water in one, electrolyte in one. Felt great until the coffee ran out (see point 1). I have some caffeine gels as backup, but coffee works for me.

  3. I had fun. Not even type 2 fun. Just fun. I found ticking off each of the zones in succession a mini-accomplishment that left me feeling great and had the nice break (8 minutes) to reset the brain and legs. It should be an actually enjoyable event.

I’ve also loved eating as much as I want this week, knowing it’ll be used on the day. @Nate_Pearson you are an inspiration.

I’m going to be a debbie downer, but some stuff has come up so i’m not going to be able to dedicate the time to do this :frowning:

Been to Holland & Barratt today… stocked up on various flavoured flapjacks, 2 packs of Dextro Energy tablets and some ISO Energy powder for making up a few drinks.

Her in doors isn’t aware of her Domestique duties yet  Aim to have a good breakfast an hour before event (Alpen/porridge) and a nice cup of bean to cup coffee… Need someone to bring me the fresh coffee when not doing intervals…

Great job! On #3, I thought I was the only one eating everything in sight in preparation for tomorrow (including a crap load of cookies) :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve been opting for brownies. Denser calorie load? Or like benefits of chocolate? It’s definitely scientific though.

It’s probably more psychological than anything else but i’m gonna make sure my chain/drivetrain are clean and greased before I start, even if there is 1 watt saving there i’m gonna need it

Nutritition wise I, maybe naively, am going to treat it like I would a long ride, such as a few of the hilly audax I’ve done. I’ll see how it goes though - not too far to go to the kitchen!

My main takeaway from the half was an easier week going in to the fill. I did plan a specific taper week from rolling road race, but legs weren’t feeling the love so I just went Baxter yesterday. I’m even doubting the value of an opener at this point.

Did that last Saturday, so much smoother, I’m sure I’ve save a couple of watts.

Ditto on the caffeine! On my two rides of Disaster-Half I did two espresso shots during the ride. I feel like it helped and I had no stomach issues.

Raided Holland and Barrett at the weekend for their flap jack bars

@mcneese.chad put me down for 9:00GMT / 10:00CEST, I’m about 90% sure I’ll be able to block off the time Saturday at this point, so might as well…

Welcome to the party

@mcneese.chad Since my work obligations have changed, it looks as though I’ll be making my attempt tomorrow instead of Saturday @ 13:00 gmt.
If anyone is looking for some encouragement tomorrow I plan to be wheels down @ 06:00 cst (12:00 gmt) . I’ll try to have discord running in the background at least.
Remember, this is just for ā€œfunā€.
